MG TD TF 1500 - Silicone Brake Fluid

Folks, what is the consensus? I am doing all cylinders including the master, all 3 hoses.

I am figuring on flushing the pipes, maybe removing the brake light switch and cleaning separately.

Flush with mehtylated spirits?

Thoughts?

Thanks.

I changed my TD over many, many years ago and have had no problems at all. I believe at the time I changed the master cylinder and wheels cylinders and flushed out the system with silicone fluid. About every four years I bleed the system at all four wheels to move the fluid around a bit.

I changed from conventional glycol ester brake fluid to silicone without issues. I drained the old brake fluid completely, flushed with acetone, then compressed air, then silicone brake fluid. I then changed all the rubber seals, filled up with new silicone fluid, and bled the system (the most difficult part).

If you disassemble, I would recommend you replace all the copper washer gaskets on the banjo connections.

Peter, I put it in my 53 MG-TD and 67 Camaro 5 years ago and happy I did. I feel it was a little harder to bleed, but worth it. I must add, I put all new lines on them the same time.

My cars with top-mounted master cylinders get DOT5 Silicon. Those with MC mounted down low get DOT4. No problems with either.

Just be careful which can you pickup....
DOT 5 is not like DOT 5.1

Agree with all the comments above.

Silicone will certainly seek out ANY miniscule defects in any surface.
As well as the new copper washers, check for any imperfections/pitting
on the wheel cylinder face/land where the brake line enters. Good washers are one thing, however the mating surfaces at every point need to be trued.

The beauty of Silicone of course is that the paint on brake drums and
backplates always look new !

Thanks for all the responses, I have ordered the washers mentioned, hopefully the new cylinders will make good connections. Parts will arrive tomorrow and Thursday I will start work.

I appreciate the note about 5 Vs 5.1, had read about that. Is there any special brand I should be looking for out there?

Thanks.

They would have to follow the same standards. So Any of them would be OK. I just happened to pick up RedLine DOT 5
M Grogan

Started the process today, disconnected the MC, removed the bleed nipple and blew through with air, clear. Added a hose to brake pipe at the MC end, dipped that in alcohol.

Used a vacuum bleeder to draw fluid to RF wheel until it flowed clear.

Repeated the same on the LF wheel, when the drums comeback from machining I will move the car enough to do the same on the rear.

After all the lines are clear I will replace all wheel cylinders, MC, rubber hoses, brass washers, brake shoes, and introduce the DOT5 fluid.

I feel like I am making progress, all the parts are here ready to move along, if I could just avoid the honey-do list for the house repairs I would be further along.
