MG TD TF 1500 - Shock Absorber Fluid Level

I have noted a small patch of oil under the rear of the car and have found this is from one of the rear shock absorbers. I rebuilt the front ones myself and they are fine but fitted "reconditioned" ones to the rear. The leak has stopped and the shocker operates properly. I have removed it for inspection and the oil level has dropped to just below the level of the shaft - hence no more leaking. Since everthing was working well with the oil at this level, with no leaks I think I will just reassemble everything. Any comments?

For what its worth, mine are exactly the same, so I look forward to any responses. Seems to me that as long as the main functional components are submerged in oil, there is a good chance that they will function as they should. However the shaft will only be lubricated by splash.

Dave,

I went through the same reasoning and conclusion as you. By curiosity I checked a cross section diagram to check the level of the lowest part of the shaft, compared to the piston face. I see that pistons, at the top of their stroke are indeed below the shaft. This means we are OK to assume that the oil level can be below the shaft. This does not take into account oil expansion due to heat nor driving on steep roads, e.g. For Jan, Highlands!!!

Hi John,

Funny you should mention the Highlands. I am booked on a three day tour of the Highlands next year organised by the MG Octagon Club. We will be staying in the Glencoe Hotel which many will know is one of the highlights s Scotland.

Cheers

Jan,

I don't know why, but I was under the impression that you are from Scotland.

Hi John,

I do live in Scotland just to the north of Glasgow close to the Glengoyne Distillery - a superb malt. The Highland run has been organised by the Central Scotland branch of the Octagon Club. I will have to drive about 100 miles to the start in Glencoe. There are some early MGs taking part but we will have a recovery crew accompanying us. Let's hope no one needs their services.

Jan, when you are in Glencoe can you check on a piece of land I own. My daughter bought me a square foot of land in Glencoe, and one for her, and another for her partner, three square feet, I could almost camp out on it.

Hi Donald,

If you can tell me exactly where the "plot" of land you own is I will take a photograph of it for you. If it is accessible for cars I will get a pic of it surrounded by the MGs on the rally. It would be a good photo and story to put in the Octagon Bulletin.

Cheers

Hi Jan, It would be wonderful to actually 'see' my plot.

It is listed as: Glencoe Wood, Keil Hill, plot no. A11622.

I don't know whether it's on your route but it would make a good story.

I thought it was a joke at first but apparently it's real.

My family came from Rothsey originally, to Oz in 1851 for the gold 'digens'.

They sell plots and titles to support a wildlife project, looks interesting.
