MG TD TF 1500 - Road trip

Our local Williamsburg T series group is planning a trip this September through the Blue Ridge mountains for 4 days. The group will have TD's, TF's, and TC's. Does anyone have a list of spare parts that we should have with us. It would make it easier if someone has already made one up. We'll have the usual fuel pump, points plates, an axle with a mounted bearing, coils, and plugs, along with tools and lots of oil and water. There will be a chase car so weight and size are not a problem. This for me, will be a chance to see what my Dave Clark 4.30 rear end conversion will do in the mountains. Should be interesting.

J.B. Weld, WD-40 multi meter, test light, map gas torch, brazing rod, solder, TC-Early TD oil filter to pump and oil filter to block pipes, zip ties, booster pack with an air compressor on it, set of Radiator hoses, perhaps a water pump and a TD-TF generator, distributor cap and a red rotor, a handful of BSF nuts and bolts, 4.50 by 19" and 5.50 by 15" tubes. SU float and rebuild kit.

From memory, this is what I carry in my TC on extended tours. It's mostly stuff you can't get at a local auto parts store. It may look like a lot but it's primarily very small parts. Plus a basic set of tools, of course.

(TC) marks TC-specific parts, so double up for TD/TF

Various nuts and bolts for chassis and carburetor
Carburetor fiber washers
A bit of gasket material and sealer
Upper radiator hose
Fan belt
2 Inner tubes (TC)
Length of rim tape
1 Brake master rebuild kit
1 Wheel cylinder rebuild kit
Length of fuel hose with banjo fitting and bolt (barbed)
Various Hose clamps
Exhaust doughnut
Tachometer cable
Copper crush washers for various banjo, brake and sump fittings
Manifold gasket
Complete distributor, gapped and ready to drop in
Generator brushes (TC) and rear bushing
Fuel pump
Coil
1 long spark plug wire
headlamp bulb
Fuses
A couple spokes and nipples (TC)
Various electrical connectors
Length of electrical wire
Bit of baililng wire

And some extras that I wouldn't carry but might throw in a chase car if there are high-mileage T's on the run...

Water pump
U-joint
Front Brake hose (TC)
Generator (TC)
Control box (different but adaptable to TC and TD)
Spare axle (TC) (assuming there are TCs along without uprated axles)
Tire (TC)
Oil pressure hose

A battery cut off switch, on all vehicles, mounted under dash for easy & fast operation.
A fire extinguisher in all vehicles, that can be grabbed at an instant.
Primary ignition wire, & jumper leads with alligator clips.
Hand cleaner, paper towels, Emory paper to clean fuel pump points. Spark plug wire pliers to diagnose a misfire.

The auto parts stores are selling some kind of miracle tape the a member of our club (Foothills British Car Club - he drives a TR-6 but I talk to him anyway)swears by. He says it can patch a leaking radiator hose. Sounds like good stuff to have along.

If you're coming as far south as SC or Southern NC, send me an iteneary and maybe I can join you on a leg of your journey.

Wow, lots of things that I didn't think of but sure could come in handy. Thanks.
Jud, we are going to go north towards Gettysburg. South would be good but most of the group, including me, have never been to the battlefields.

Sounds like a good drive but someday you need to doo the Blue Ridge parkway and the even better MG driving roads all around it.

There are a couple of helpful spare parts lists in the BBS Archives, too.
Good luck with your club's Blue Ridge Mountain trip. Our Chesapeake Chapter is doing our Fifth Annual Fall Ramble this year on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay.

Triple A card and a credit card is all we ever carry. Cheers - Dave

And Len has very good advice,,,
Fire extinguisher and cut off switch THAT CAN BE GRABBED IN AN INSTANT!!!! Not hidden away some where like under the bonnet!!
Steve Wincze

I'm with Dave DuBois, AAA Plus (200 mile towing included in membership) and a credit card. Every outing is an adventure with my wife.

However, it would be great to set up an owner's list with addresses of those who would be willing to put up a fellow adventurer in the event that a fellow enthusiast breaks down nearby.

Nothing like forging new friendships during a time of adversity.

You guys call for a tow truck for something as simple as a bad rotor cap? Please tell me you at least carry some basic spare parts and tools! I'd rather open the bonnet for five minutes and be on my way than be stuck in the middle of nowhere on a tour, or have my day trip ruined.
Steve S

Len is 100% right, a cutoff switch close by. And Dave is right, a credit card and AAA(200 mile card). Plus of course your smart phone and a list of contacts in the areas you are going through. I know, as I just finished a 800 Kilo trip. I went to start my TD on one of the legs of my trip. My starter engaged and jammed into the ring gear and exactly at the same time my solenoid jammed on, smoke started coming from the starter. I instantly switched off the battery. Phoned my contacts in the area, found through them a good repair shop, had AAA tow me to them and was on my way again in about 2 hours. Only other thing I would add is at least 50 protection sun tan lotion.
Cheers, Barry
Have a great trip.

Steve, I carry a few spare parts, an extra fuel pump, some gaskets and an extra electronic ignition coil and my tools. I carry a roll of military tape for the radiator hoses which seals leaks beautifully, duct tape and some baling wire. It's always an adventure. Sometimes I tow another TD along just in case.. ;)

Sorry, Steve, but that just ain't quite right. Once in a while a member listing is published by a third party. Let's not raise that stink again. What is happening though is that NEMGTR is resurrecting 'the Motorist Assistance Directory'. Members are being asked to sign up on the directory to offer help for folks who have a need for it. Go to the Register site (www.nemgtr.org), log in, go to 'Member Support' and sign in. Thank Kathy Ahrendt for the work. Bud
