MG TD TF 1500 - Rings and things update

After 3 months on jack stands Mobius took me for a ride today. Did about 70 miles of back roads. The car has never run better.

Things done without removing engine:
Ridge reamed and honed cylinders.
New pistons and pins.
New rings,
Balanced connecting rods.
Len Fanelli's roller cam, lifters, rods, springs(All designed for street use with a supercharger).
New rear cam bearing.
Refurbished the oil pump.
Valve cover now vented to air filter.
New front double lip seal.
Added oxygen sensor to exhaust with digital readout mounted under dash.

I've added dye to the oil. So far so good.
I will report more on performance as I add miles.

So far I am a happy camper.

Mort, that's awesome! You are becoming a man of legend.

Hi Mort. Some questions.

Any problems fitting the Fanelli cam with the engine in the car?
I guess it went in while the pistons were out?
If not could you have done the job without removing the pistons?
Any problems at all with fitting the front bearing? Why replace the rear bearing, was it shot or just a precaution?
Did you modify the lower valve spring seat, the new spring or just leave the seat out?
Which way did you install the roller lifters, inside or out?
Any problems with block or breather plate gasket clearance?
If so how did you deal with it?
Finally why the dye in the oil? Is this so you can trace leaks, if any?
Cheers

"Any problems fitting the Fanelli cam with the engine in the car? "
Not really.
"I guess it went in while the pistons were out?
If not could you have done the job without removing the pistons?"
I put the pistons in first. I don't think it matters. I believe you can do a piston job or a cam job separately.
"Any problems at all with fitting the front bearing?"
I did not remove the front bearing. It stayed in place during the entire procedure and it looked fine so I left it alone.
"Why replace the rear bearing, was it shot or just a precaution?"
The rear bearing was all galled up on the inside surface. It did not seem to effect the hardened surface of my old cam shaft at all. It was just prudent to replace it.
"Did you modify the lower valve spring seat, the new spring or just leave the seat out?"
The lower spring retainer that comes with the roller kit has no outside lip and Len said it was fine to use it. After discussing it with him I decided to use the old retainers. The new springs have a slightly larger OD and did not fit in the old retainers. By grinding just a little off the bottom outer edge of the springs I was able to get them to fit nicely. The amount of material removed has no effect on the springs usage.
"Which way did you install the roller lifters, inside or out?"
I put the connecting link on the outside. I believe it would interfere with the block if placed on the inside.
"Any problems with block or breather plate gasket clearance? If so how did you deal with it?"
Len has a nice solution for keeping the gasket away from the lifters. I assembled the tappet cover gasket to the tappet cover and placed the brass nuts through the assembly. Then I forced a star washer over the shoulder of the tappet cover nut and it locks in place and hold the gasket away from the lifters.
"Finally why the dye in the oil? Is this so you can trace leaks, if any?"
Yes, I will monitor the block and pan for leaks and I will probably have a few nuts to re-tighten.

Any chance of running on a chassis dyno? Looks great, glad you are up and running. George
George Butz

George,
I am scheduled to run it on a chassis dyno in a few weeks. The shop I will use likes to do it in the better weather and leave the doors open.

I'll post the results later.

I'll also post some observations with my Oxygen sensor as I get some experience with it. I will also test it against the dyno.

Mort did you re-curve your dizzy?
Peter TD 5801
P Hehir

Peter,
I spoke to the USA guru on dizzy's and we decided to run it the way it is for now.
He had re-built and re-curved it a couple of years ago when I had the previous supercharger on it.

Mort, on another thread you spoke about an inexpensive program from Adobe to convert pdf to html. Can you please give me more details. Thanks. Bud
Bud Krueger

Mort, why didn't you remove the engine?
Or did you just start with changing the contact points and never stopped?
Willem van der Veer

Did you do a dyno run before all the changes?
MG LaVerne

So very interested in your dyno run. I have wanted to do one since I installed len's cam, but haven't been able to yet. Do you have the supercharger on it yet (can't remember if you had one before or we're planning to get one)? I should be done with the trans rebuild this week and be driving again. Can't wait. The car has been down since august last year.

Got the info, Mort. Thanks. Bud

Mort,

Would you mind posting a photo of your oxygen meter installation? I'm looking for installation ideas short of putting a new hole in my nice new dash.

Thanks,

Willem,
I could have pulled the engine but it never became necessary.

LaVerne,
Unfortunately I did not run a dyno before but I am more interested in tuning the current set up than comparing it to the old.

Jim,
I will post a few photos. Although others have mounted the bung in the exhaust a lot closer to the manifold I went with the manufacturers suggested location. Trying to keep the heat down on the sensor and still get an accurate reading. I hope you can see the set up under the dash. I just made a simple bracket out of 1/8 x 1/2" aluminum bar. Painted it black and screwed it to the wood.

Mort,

Cool. The rectangular format lends itself well to the under-dash location.

Thanks,
