MG TD TF 1500 - replacing starter motor

I was in discussion with someone about replacing the starter motor.

We were talking about removing the two bolts at the attach end of the starter.

However, when I was reading section of N.7 in the Workshop Manual, it seems I need to remove parts of the exhaust system(?).

Is this really true? Or, can I just remove the two bolts?

Thanks, Joe.

What type of T car do you have. the TD starter can be removed easily without taking off the exhaust. The TC is a cat of another color since the steering gear runs down the same side.

I have a 1951 MG TD.

Joe,
I also have a 51 MG TD and you only have to remove the 2 bolts that hold the starter to the block. There is good clearance with the exhaust. This is true if your car is left hand drive. I cannot comment on a right hand drive TD.

joe, you may already be aware of this, but if not, before removing starter remove the ground cable from the battery. then remove electrical connections then the two attach bolts/nuts for the starter. regards, tom

Pretty much ingnore the factory manual on removing that and some other things. No clue where they got that idea- maybe on a prototype you had to or something. George

No problem removing the starter on a RHD TD. Plenty of room even with the steering shaft.

Joe,
Are you removing the starter to have it rebuilt? or replaced? An MG midget starter works, looks original, and is a lot less expensive!

Thanks for all the tips.

I successfully replaced the starter and got the engine started with a new starter motor.

There was plenty of room to drop the starter motor down by the exhaust pipe without having to remove the exhaust system.

I have a RHD 1951 TD... I replaced the old starter with a Midget starter... Two bolts and the cable...
pretty straight forward.
