MG TD TF 1500 - REAR TD LEAF SPRING REMOVAL

I need some guidance before I do some damage. I am replacing my rear axle. I planned to drop the springs to do this as I have a complete replacement axle to install.
I have removed the nuts for the rear lower bracket shackle pin which goes thru the end of the spring but as yet have not been able to remove the shackle pin. I have given it a few whacks with a hammer and it isn't moving. I have considered burning it out with a torch but am reluctant with the fuel tank so close. if all else fails I can cut the shackle pin at both ends then drop the spring so I will have better access. Do I have to remove the fender to access the upper shackle?
Thanks Morris

Morris,
As I recall the shackle pin has a shoulder in the center that is larger than the hole in the shackle plates. To remove them you must take all four nuts off, then remove the shackle plates and bushings, then you should be able to slide out the pins.
I removed the rear apron under the spare tire.
No need to hammer, burn or remove the fenders.

Morris - If you remove the drums and backing plate (at least on one side), the rear axle can just be passed through over the springs - I just got through doing this - even did it by myself with the use of a trolly jack. Cheers - Dave

I think I scraped one of the rear wings working on the shackles years ago. You can remove the rear most fender mounting bolt, and just move it outward a touch for clearance. Also, maybe the rear splash apron for room.

Thanks. I should think before I ask for help. Of course the plate has to come off to remove the shackle pin. It is apparent the rubber bushings are in good condition so I will do as David suggests. My new to me axle which is the replacement is completely assembled with re-sleeved brake cylinders and I did not want to disassemble it. It is a TF axle rebuilt years ago and not re-installed. The change in rear end ratio will be a bit better and the price was right.
My old axle is whining, leaking oil into the left drum and with bearing noise.
Thanks for the help
Cheers

Morris - Remove the check straps and let the axle and springs down as far as they go and I'll bet you can get the axle assembly in with the drums and backing plates in place. If not, you will only have to remove one end and the backing plate will come off with the brake shoes in place. Cheers - Dave

David, thank you. I understand what you mean.
