MG TD TF 1500 - Rear end overhaul - TD 15001

So, one of the first tasks of my restoration is to overhaul the rear differential. I have been referred to the right guy who has plenty of experience rebuilding MG rear ends and has very reasonable rates.

The mechanic told me to procure the necessary bearings, seals, etc... and to drop off everything at his shop. Of course, I know jack squat about rear ends other than how to wrench one on and off a vehicle.

Can someone advise me on what parts I would need to purchase, assuming that the rear end is still fully operable? Would I just need to get the wheel bearings/oil seals/pumpkin gasket and call it good? Or should I replace anything else? I am not changing the gear ratio as I plan to purchase a 5-speed tranny from Hi-gear. I simply want the most solid stock piece possible. Thanks, Kevin

hard to tell what you need without knowing what if anything needs to be fixed. If the axle is running ok, not noisy and not leaking, why open it up at all ? Just change the oil.

If it is leaking, changing the seals on the axle ends should be sufficient. Outer bearings can be changed if needed. Half shafts can be pulled and examined as well.
Still no need to open the diff for all of this.

If any bearings inside need to be changed, all the adjustments need to be made as for a diff cwp change or re-assembly. Minimum you would need are new bearings for those that are broken and a choice of shims to re-adjust the new ones. New lock nuts and lock washers as well.
You find all the parts in the Moss catalogue and you can order the full selection and return unused parts within a reasonable timeframe.
If the axle needs to be opened, you might want to change the ratio as well (see the many threads in here about how to do that and what parts are needed).

I agree with Mike- if the center chunk is working fine, leave it alone. Maybe change the pinion seal, and/or gasket if leaking. Outer stuff as Mike says. George

Thanks, guys. I thought it was leaking, but on closer inspection I figured out that all the grease and grime came from the motor and a leaky brake cylinder. I will clean it up, change the fluid and move on.
