MG TD TF 1500 - Purolator Oil filter

Hi everyone - another obscure query in the interest of science !

My TF #7973 Nov. '54 has a Purolator filter which everyone suggests should be a silver/green colour. Mine has clearly been painted several times but under the large end washer I found some metallic bronze paint similiar to the instrument panel. This is usually attributed to the Tecalemite filter - anyone out there with evidence of a similiar colour ?

JC - You might want to talk with Paul Propst here in the USA. Paul has a 54 that he is putting back together as an all original car. He is also documenting in drawing form all the component & related parts. designdizir@yahoo.com

My original 1954 oil filter is the silver/green colour.

I have a brand new Purolator oil filter in the box. This is the sealed cannister type that has lines that screw in to both ends. It is orange. I have also seen grey, blue and black ones, depending on the manufacturer. They are nice period pieces, but poor filters. I converting to a spin on type, which looks good but is much better.

Ira - I believe you have a filter for a TC/early TD. Later TD's & TF's used a horizontal replacement element type. John in the UK has a TF so his is horizontal as well. The Purolator he speaks about is the 'can', or outside case of the filter not the actual filter element itself. I did speak with Paul P. yesterday, and he said the tan/bronze cans are hard to find. As like John's, most were repainted to match the engine color after a rebuild. John, please contact Paul (or myself) about this can. He would like you to get a color scan done from your local paint supplier so we can have a color #. Thanks mick

John, I also have a Austin Healey and the engine paint color is a "silver/green" color that is very similar to the filter cannister color. It is sold by Moss in spray cans. I used this on the filter and It looks "original". Also looks OK on the valve cover, rather than silver wheel paint. Not sure about the concours police.
It was my understanding that there were two brands of filters used and the colors were "bronzeish" on one and "greeenish" on the other. These colors were mass produced OEM paints and varied in hue and shade at the time.

Thanks for all your comments. Mick I will contact Paul P direct but do I get the feeling that you think 'bronze' was used on some Purolator cans. ? I'm afraid I won't be able to examine the 'bronze' remnant untill the Autumn oil change. The colour appears to be lighter than the dash 'bronze' but of course being under the washer for 50yrs hasn't had the chance to age ! Of course a PO may just have liked BMC 'Gold Seal' bronze and painted the whole engine or just the can. but under the washer ? The engine is the original by the way.

Dallas you're right about the two 'filter make' colours generaly used and you're also right to point out that OEM colours varied from the start of production. Moss don't list the 'correct' silver green colour over here - does anyone have a non Dupont code for it ? I'm not worried about the 'concours police' - I just have an enquiring mind and don't even enter concours events !
