MG TD TF 1500 - Pre-spring check-up

I was poking around the 'net and came across this. A reminder that dumb stuff happens and it's worth while to do a bumper-to-bumper check-up once in a while.

Well M.A. From NC

Green is normally an Earth wire but there may be better ways to ground it though. :)

Unfortunately it is so cold up here I don't think I can get into the cocoon just yet - as the plastic will break.

I will do a good look through, oil change and grease up when it gets warmer. Say sometime in May time.
Rod.

Uh, Rod, you might want to re-think that color code. Green is indeed the code for ground in house wiring, but it's the key-switched 12 volts in our cars. Bud
Bud Krueger

Color code? I'll have to look into this odd concept you speak of.

Color code?

MG LaVerne

Ah yes, LaVerne and the purple rat's nest. MA from NC, just in case you're serious I'd suggest a look at page N.20 of the WSM. Bud
Bud Krueger

To carry Bud's definition of the green circuit (wire) is is the ignition switched, fused circuit. Black is the ground (or earth) wire.

Rod,
I have always been under the impression that it is best to change the oil when the car is layed up for winter storage,,, so as not to have that old, acidic contaminated oil sitting in there, and allowing "bad" stuff to settle out

Steve,,,
Steve Wincze

Totally agree Steve.
I changed the oil in September. When I put in the new rear axle form Dave. Only drove it about 20 miles but after the winter and the possibility of condensation etc., always put in new oil (Kendal’s) – before the first drive of the spring. It’s kind of like the first Gin and Tonic of the summer for the old girl. :)

As for wiring Bud. Hummm, your right - I was only being frivolous :)
But as LaVerne showed - Some Modder’s don’t care it seems. Or you just use what you got?

FYI on a TD there are only 3 solid green wires used in the original loom. One goes to the wiper motor, another to the stop lamp switch & the third to the petrol warning light. There are of course other green wires in the loom but these all have a trace. Household wiring earth here in OZ is green but with a yellow trace. Cheers

Peter, you forgot the flasher unit on newer cars. Bud

A TD with indicators? Such a thing would never have happened here in Feb 1951 :-) Cheers
