MG TD TF 1500 - Points Interference with Rotor

Yesterday I was going through the distributor for maintenance and to set static timing on my recently acquired mgtf 1500.
I noticed that the fiber portion of the breaker points (the portion that rides on the distributor cam) was above the top of the cam by about 1/32 inch or less and was rubbing on the distributor rotor. I found an old set of points in the tool box that had been replaced probably years ago and fiber portion on that point set showed the rotor was rubbing on that set also.
Has anyone run into this? I filed the top of the fiber so it was below the top of the distributor cam and would not rub on the rotor. The engine seems to run fine. However, I have never worked on an engine with this condition. Typically the fiber runs fully on the cam, not above it of below it.
It appears the breaker base plate has been replaced, not sure this would be an issue. Is there something missing that would raise the cam?
Anybody have an ideas?
Thanks,

have someone measure the height of a rotor,,, I am not near my car, so I can not measure mine,,, Meybe you have a rotor that has a tall side???
STEVE WINCZE

The points vertical height is controlled by the thickness of the base plate, and the fiber washer under the movable pivot. I think the cam height is fixed riding on the advance mechanism cams. May be best to fix as you did. George

Hi Steve,
check for up & down movement of the cam. Wear in the thrust under the advance plate can allow the cam to drop. I also think a mix of early/late parts will do this.
