MG TD TF 1500 - Passenger foot rest

This is one of those curious things I keep hearing about and yet I have never seen one in a TD or TF yet.

They are listed in both the Moss and NTG catalogues. Has anyone actually got one in their car? Where does it fasten to? Is it covered in carpet? Is it worth bothering with? Is it only worth installing (so I have heard) to put a fire extinguisher behind?

It seems to be one of those little things that never gets a mention!

I went a number of years without the footrest. No big deal if you don't sit on that side. For a passenger, it does help for longer trips as it gives something to rest your feet against, taking pressure off the back of your thighs on the seat.

I have also seen some folks have cut a little door in the footrest so they have a small storage area behind it.

Carpeting actually fits better with it in. It goes over it uand up to the firewall.

Most carpet kits as supplied won't fit without the footrest. I put one in my TF, I'm still figuring out what to do with the ~80 cubic inches of storage space behind it.

Your passenger will like you for it, especially on long trips. It releives the strain on their legs.

It bolts to the fire wall in two places and is screwed to the floorboard in two places. It is covered with carpet, and most carpet kits have the passenger side front carpet end at the base of the footrest, with a separate piece covering the footrest.

Mark,
I simply put a hinge at the top of the foot-rest, and it really does provide some nice storage. As a matter of fact, on mine the outside holes of a standard door hinge lined-up perfectly with the holes in the rest and the firewall. Seems to me that ANY additional space can't be overlooked on these lbc's.

No long trips yet. Last night, the #3 valve stuck as soon as the operating temperature reached 85C (normal operating temperature). I'm going to pull the head this weekend and take it to the machine shop on Monday. While the car is out of commission, it might be a good time to put a hinge on the footrest.

Our TF footrest is boleted and screwed same as Don H"s.
Having a car that came from Germany, the dealer had installed, of all things, windscreen washers. Hidden behind the footrest is a "Bluemel's" vinyl washer bag with top filler. The pump to operate it is located on the right side of the dash.

DAVE,
As most have said, it is an ideal place for a small tool bag,,, BUT, I don't thing it would be a good place for a fire extinguisher,,, that is something that you need quick access to,,,better to have the extinguisher in plain sight rather than hide it,,, ie. what if some one needs one in a hurry, and you are not there to show them where it is,

Re Footrest:--- Back in the days when these "T's" were almost new, there was quite a few that used the space behind the footrest for a positive ground-to-negative ground converter. The one I still have is an Archer which was one of Radio Shacks brands. The first solid state radios were just coming out then and were quite popular because they drew a lot less current than the tube radios.
