MG TD TF 1500 - Paper Air Filter Cartridge

I want to retain the original black oil bath cannister air filter but replace the inside gauze with a paper or other filter to keep things clean.

I searched the archives - there was some dialogue about finding a lawnmower paper air filter and cutting the top off but I am not comfortable with this.

I also dont want to modify the existing cannister so I can reverse the mod anytime in the future

Has anyone got a simple elegant clean solution?

I dont want to go "pancake"

Thanks

I see NTG sells a K&N internal element as part of their "original-style" air filter assembly. I'm not sure if this would fit in an original casing though.

Have you ever thought of a foam filter that will just go around the original. ( on the inside) It should trap dirt as it comes in the filter and into the canister. Severe service trucks usually use this. Easier to wash out the foam, oil then put back in.

I don't mean to be the voice of dissent, but I don't find K&N filters all that great. IF they are properly serviced, they seem to do a decent job, but they very seldom are, and are not worth the trouble to clean. Give me a good paper filter any day, one that can be visually examined and thrown away when the dirt shows.

Unfortunately, I also don't know one to fit the stock oil bath.

I read a note somewhere that K&N have good flow because they are not particularly good filters. I worked at AC years ago and the investment in getting good filter paper developed was quite significant.

I thought the oil bath method was the bomb as long as you maintain it. am I wrong?

While I have no idea how much dirt, dust etc gets through the oil bath, I know that when I clean it out, there is a lot of "sludge" on the bottom!!! I think it is quite efficient..

If you really want to use something other than oil,,,, I think C.R.'s idea is very good,,,the foam could be a "throw away" after 1,000 miles or so,,,,,,,

SPW - Yes I agree the original oil bath does seem to do a good job at trapping dust and dirt - it is just that it is a messy game cleaning, changing and refilling it and I would like to see visually if the filter is dirty or not.

Tim - I called NTG in the UK this morning and the lady there didnt think the paper filter they sell for their replacement cannisters is suitable for an original.

I am sure there must be something out there that fits -clearly its not a common mod though else folk would know what works.

Looks like I will try an oiled foam approach and see how it goes. If anyone has any thoughts about shape or where to locate it in the canister - I would be very happy for the advice - I have visions of the thing being sucked down the hole and travelling along the carb inlet manifold :-(

Ray,
Look at the filters that Marve and Jim have on their supercharged engines in the Marshall J 75 Blower thread,,, drill out the center for the "through bolt" and shim as necessary between it and the inside bottom of the original oil bath ,,,,,

Ray,
I should have said "Shim between the top of the new air filter and the inside of the top of the original oil bath ,,, The through bolt will go through the shim to hold everything in place..

I have just washed out my metal filter in petrol and wiped all the sludge out of the bottom of the filter cannister. The muck was unbelievable - after only a years driving.

I have come to the conclusion that its not done a bad job.

I had a good look at how to uncrimp the rolled edge of the top part of the cannister to remove the metal gauze and replace with a paper filter, but its not worth vandalising it.

I have answered my own question....stick to the original filtration system - it may be messy but it works OK.
