MG TD TF 1500 - panel rheostat

I've come across reference to a panel rheostat which controlled the panel lamp intensities. Where was this typically located? Was it a standard fitting on a 51?

Haven't come across it so far...

Thanks, Geoff

On a left hand drive TD, it's the last switch on the bottom right. Check the Turn Signal thread for Gordon;'s pic of the panel.

Geoff,

My 51 TD did not have a rheostat on the fascia lights. It was an on/off switch. I have never heard of the lights being controlled in that manner on a TD.

It's Moss p/n 145-900, for TDs from #10701(late 1951). On Gordon's panel it's the second from the right on the bottom. Mine is on the far right, so I'm not sure whose is correct. Prior to TD 10701, it was just an on/off switch like the fog lamp switch.

Mine is also on the far right..a little flatish switch. Took it apart and just cleaned all the crud out of it and it seems to work fine (not that you have to 'dim' the light at all)
Mine is 'off' full left, then increases in light going to the right...then reaches a point where it goes full 'off' again...not sure if that is the way it is supposed to or not.
My choke and starter switches were changed to chrome ones at some point and the starter one not used. The panel below the dash has the heater (left) and starter push (right) and a heater 'on' light in the middle.

Mine is to the far right too. about Zero to 12 ohms, Here is what they look like inside... All this stuff is in the electrical section of my website.

That explains it; my MG #10467 is just an on/off switch.

The early TD has an on-off switch for the panel lights. Starting with car # TD10751 (Oct. 15, 1951) this switch was replaced with a rheostat - 'T' Series Handbook page 44. Cheers - Dave

Now I know what the rheostat switch was for in my parts box. I thought they were all just on off switches and that rehostat might have been for a heater. Still learning more from you guys after 39 years with TD 1720.
