MG TD TF 1500 - NOT Mark II carbs on eBay

160481263897

Probably TF carbs, not Mark II. Seller says they will fit a Mark II engine and since the TF engine is basically a Mark II they must be Mark II carbs. Wrong.

Then how to tell the difference ? I have, as I believe, original MKII carbs on my MKII engine, but how would I identify if they may have been changed for TF carbs ?
GD Nijhof

Two easy ways to tell the difference: TD/C carbs are marked right - 4031/12 and left - 4031/8, and TD/C carbs have only two holes on the intake flange. TF carbs have the four holes you see in this eBay ad.

Any other Mark II questions?

Tom

Because you asked I have a question

My TD MKII has always seemed to run rich.

I’ve owned the car for 35+ years. I’ve worked on the problem, had the car professionally restored, sent the carbs to a specialist, etc. no luck.

I’m running GJ needles which are the TF STD needles. I was told EW or EU needles would work better but I have not tried them yet.

How does your car run? And what needles are you using?

Steve - I'll check my needle charts tomorrow and see if I can help you. I would certainly also speak with Joe Curto, who has forgotten more about SU carbs than I will ever know.

Tom

PS - what is your serial number?
t lange

Tom - I did talk to Joe a few weeks ago as a matter of fact. I mistakenly told him I was running LS1 needles( std for the MKII). So he sent me a set of GJ needles I went to put them in and realized that I had already switched to the GJ’s. I have not called Joe back to let him know.

It’s been so long that it’s run this way I was beginning to think maybe the 11/2” carbs are to much for the size of the engine.

My car number is TD/C 17218

I’m heading to the western mountains of Maine tomorrow until the end of next week. I’ll be unable to reply
for a few days.

Steve - as you probably know from reading the archives, the needle is only one carb component, all of which have to be spot on - and many Mark IIs run perfectly well. The larger carbs are not over-carburating the engine, and can be made to run fine. Contemporary reports indicate the Mark II would run away from the standard TD at higher speeds, but admitted that the standard car with 1-1/4" SUs would leave the TD/C behind at lower speeds.

My guess is that the problem lies in fuel level, jet size or some similar physical cause, perhaps engine internals such as cylinder head/compression ratio.

I have many questions, and hope to hear from you when you return. I'm sure others want to chime in, too.

Over what years were the MKII's made......?
gblawson(gordon- TD27667)

The first Mark II was made on 3 May 1950, TD/C 1124; the last one was made on Aug. 17, 1953, TD/C 29909.

I see that another MKII has showed up on E bay. JUst how many of those did they make?
Tom Maine (TD8105)

Total MKII production was 1,710.

"Just how many of those did they make? "

"Total MKII production was 1,710."

Of which 4200 survive ;^)

I question how many Mark IIs were made, based on the production records. I can identify 1685 TD/C cars, but not 1710. Was Claudager the one who came up with that 1710 figure?

And yes, there are three Mark II cars on eBay right bnow, surely a record.

Thanks for the input, I love it that 4200 survive..
Tom Maine (TD8105)

I love the statement of 4200 MKIIs survive. At the British Invasion yesterday sombody was looking at my TD and stated to me that he had a TD MkII. I should have just noded, but I could not resist. I said "Oh, a MkII, does it have a bump on the right hood side?" He answered no. I asked if it had extra shocks. He answered no. I asked if it had two fuel pumps. He answered no. I then asked him why he thought he had a MK II. He told me that becasue the engine number was XPAG TD2/ it was a Mark II. I said if it was really a Mark II the chassis number would be TDC something, and all of the features mentioned I mentioned should be there. He then told me that the prior owner told him it was a Mark II. He was a little disapointed when I told him the TD2 meant he had an 8 inch clutch. I am guessing a lot of other people believe as this guy does.
D. Sander

Just at a club function today( drinking beer and BS'ing) and this subject came up and we all agreed that what Mr. Sander says is the reason there is so much confusion. TD2 is taken to be a MarkII and I and others have had the same thing happen in other converstaions. Thanks guys Great in put on this ...

Hey Dallas ...How many TF 1500's are "out there"?
(Love it!)

Only Moss knows for sure how many badges they sold?
