MG TD TF 1500 - New to the group - 1954 MGTF

Hello,
I’ve been lurking here for a while reading all the posts in the TD/TF archives. The information from everyone’s posts I have read so far is outstanding and valuable if planning a T series restoration. The links to venders and to other member’s websites sharing their T series restoration experiences and photos are priceless.

The MG I have is a 1954 TF #1414 / 30748. Color is birch grey with red interior. The octagon brass tag on engine matches the number on the plate. This is a GI purchased car from Germany to the States. This has the Nuffield – Products CHR ODENDAHL FRANKFURT /M TEL 64336 badge. The car was purchased by my grandfather in 1957. He saw an ad in the paper a MG for sale in RI and asked my mom who was sixteen to go with him to check it out. He ended up purchasing the car and my mom followed him in the Pontiac while he drove the MG back to Brooklyn, CT. Early in the seventies the car was given to my mom after she got married. It has been in the family ever since.

In the works is a frame up restoration. Work is going to be performed by someone local who is very reputable restoring classic cars. This is a friend of the family whom we have high respect for we have seen his magnificent work.

I do have a question if someone can help. I am looking for a front fender for a RHD driver’s side. There was an accident in the mid ‘80’s and an aftermarket was installed. The fit is simply not the same and I would like to put on an original TF fender to improve fit.

Hi Frank,

I have a 53 TD and it has the same Nuffield badge. Where is the badge located on yours? Curiously I also purchased my MG in RI.

Jeff
J A Mathis

Jeff,

It is located on the hood side panel on the right side; just below the louvers; behind the hood push button; near the cowl to the hood rubber strip.

When I asked her last, she can't remember what part of RI the car was bought. She has all the paper work of the transaction and any sales receipts my grandpa had if he did any work done to the car. I know that he replaced the convertible top and there is sales slip for that. She also does remember there is information who was the first person who owned the car but all this information is in her safe deposit box.

Should be pretty interesting seeing all this "car history" because I know she probably hasn't opened this safe box in yearrrrsssss....

I noticed an error on my first post. The fender I am looking for is for the left. This is a import American car and it is LHD. Sorry for the confusion.....

Thanks, Frank

Frank,
Welcome to the group. That is great that you have such history on your car. Some of us find ourselfs staring at our cars wondering what the history was before purchased and have tried to learn more with little success! Keep us posted! We love pictures.
Best of luck with the resort.
Best Regards,

There are a couple of front fenders on eBay right now.

Neat history! We will be glad to help any way we can. No question is too trivial. Safety fast, George

Hi Frank, Welcome to the group. Good luck with your restoration. It is so exciting to see it come back to original condition. Then to drive it and get the "thumbs up" from bystanders.
Cheers,
Bob

Welcome Frank.

Once you get your nose wet with dismantling your TF, you will realise that this is the beginning of obtaining our own expertise, and before you know it, you will be advising us!

As for a new left wing, keep an eye on O'Connor Classic Auto's web-site. They frequently part out Ts and you may luck out. Here's their eBay web-site http://stores.ebay.com/OConnor-Classic-Autos

And I suggest you alert Brian O’Connor and let him know your needs before it gets gobbled up on eBay - sm-member@ebay.com

Frank, I'm in Plymouth at 508-746-6735. I speak TD reasonably well and a passable smidgen of TF. Bud

Welcome aboard Frank. Here is a web site that may be of some help to you http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtf/ and of course Bud Krueger's Ttalk web site with bits and pieces of hints from members of this BBS http://www.ttalk.info/Tech/TechIndex.html Cheers - Dave

Welcome to the world of TF from Germany. Our TF6688 was purchased from Christian Odendahl in Frankfort in 1954. It has the blue oval badge on right side as you noted. We also have the original lic. plate, US Forces in Germany 1954.
Our car has some dealer installed items, like windscreen washers, a Bosch heater, chrome valve covers.

Thanks to all that have replied and making me feel very welcome. Also, I found my fender in great condition so I am very pleased. (lucky)

Dave, I have viewed the mg.org/MGTF site. A great resource and I have spent hours reading that and the TTalk site too. I also viewed your website by the way.

Bud, thanks for the number. Much appreciated and close by! Nice job on the ttalk site. I have read all the tech bulletins and turnbuckle article is great since my doors have that gap on the lower front edge as well.

Colin, you have done research on these German dealer badges. Do you know of how many there are in the US? I seems to me, based on the posts I have read, they are uncommon and rare. These certainly do add an unique American/British/German historical "nostalgia" that cherishes the past to these GI/Officer imported cars.

I stop by this site frequently to read new posts and to search archives. Thanks again, Frank
