MG TD TF 1500 - new air cleaners - but what's about breather hose?

I'll go the expensive way and will buy a set of new carburettors from Burlen. One thread in the aluminium body is too worn.

I have two vokes air cleaner. The rear one has an adaptor for the breathing hose. It is 50 mm deep. The other is only 26mm deep. But theire holes don't fit to the H2 flanges. Thefore the old flanges have been widen by the pre owner. I'll avoid to follow him this way.

Burlen offers similiar new air cleaners , but both are 54mm deep. The consequence is that the front air cleaner will touch the hood. Until now I have no message wether the air cleaner has an adaptor for the breathing hose. But which air cleaner will fit and what is to do with the hose in absence of an adaptor?

I do not own the original air intake manifold and the oil bath air clearner.

So I'm asking for other solutions and thank you all for responses.

I'd found this picture (car for sale via ebay).

That's a solution. But how was it realized?

I would imagine that they drilled out a hole in the back plate and fixed a nipple there for the breather hose. I did something similar on the face of my filter.

Thank you L E D,

what is the job of the cup in your picture?

If there must be drilled a hole - must it be placed in a manner that provides filtering air which comes or goes to the carburettor/vent case? Or does air flow directly between carburettor and vent case without filter?
W_Mueller

the air from the crankcase must not be filtered as it will block it. Put the nipple between the carb intake and the filter.

It's an oil seperator/catch can.

L E D LaVerne

It runs to the carb without passing through the filter element

The top of the separator has a steel mesh that the vapors flow through.

The bottom screws on and after 1200 miles on the rebuild has been empty. I don't think you would have any problem with tapping a hole in the back plate of the filter.

You don't say what car you have, but as you mention oil bath I presume a TD. Most pancake filters are straight and will not fit on a TD without hitting the bonnet sides. What you need is the TF Vokes air cleaners that have an angled mount, but they are for 1 1/2' carbs, which may be what you have as the PO slotted the flange holes on your 1 1/4" carbs. If you are going to buy a new set from Burlen why not buy the 1 1/2" ones, then you can use the Cokes you have,I think they list them as TD competition and I believe they are a similar price.

My car is TD with SU H2 and the VOKES air cleaners are straight.

The carburettors for TF are SU H4 and H6 (all out of stock like H2). I guess that makes a difference e.g. I must have an other manifold - and without emergency I choose the original parts e.g. original air intake. At the moment the original air intake must wait until I'll catch a good ocassion.

All air filters from Burlen for H2-H6 have a depth of 54mm. That is too thick and they do not have an adaptor for the breathing hose.

At the moment the focus lies on

and as L E D mentioned I'll fit an adaptor myself.
