MG TD TF 1500 - Need Whitworth Tools

Gentlemen: Is there anyone out there who has updated and moved on to better tools who has a set of Whitworth's for sale? I need wrenches and sockets.
In fact, for TD work how large will I need?
Thanks and Safety Fast!

There are a bunch right now on ebay...saw a 1/4" socket set (i know thats a bit small)...but usually quite a selection.

Hi Norm, the larger sizes from 3/8 whitworth up all have metric equivalents, so that if you have metric spanners you will be able to get by. 3/8 = 15mm for instance. Smaller sizes have no exact equivalents so you should chase them up. You will need 5/16 and 1/4 Whitworth at the very least. Snap on used to make them but they were of course very expensive.

Cheers,

Paul.

Sears used to sell whitworth tools as I have a bunch that I bought 50yrs ago. Don't think they do any more though. I also bought a nice set from ELORA in Germany about 20 yrs ago.

Largest nuts are the axle nuts, steering wheel and crank shaft pulley. I know a 1 1/8 american socket works well on the crankshaft. In whitworth, the largest I have is 1/2 and that works for the oil banjo bolts.

watch ebay.

Get yourself a set of combination wrenches and a set of sockets. Most sets run from 1/8 W to 1/2 W (3/16 BSF to 9/16 BSF. If you can't find on ebay, try the British Tool Company (www.britishtool.com). Rob Nortier has King Dick sets. He also has the car tool kits as original.

Norm,
You will also want to have on board a 1 1/4 socket (and a long breaker bar)for the rear axle nuts, and a 1" for the front spindle nuts

Norm,
I have a nice pair of Whitworth vise-grips I will be more than happy to give you if you will pay the shipping. They appear to fit all Whitworth bolts.

Try Brit motorcycle web sites, ebay.

Several years ago a local mechanic asked me to come work on a customers MG. The owner was in his 80's and and had early alzheimers and wanted to sell his prize TC but it would not run after many years of storage. Four hours later it started and ran to perfection and I took him out for a hour's ride, his last one. I would not accept any payment for my time and trouble, so he gave me a complete set of S-K sockets and open ed, Bluepoint box ends, igniton wrenches and a set of taps and dies, which he said he would never use again.
So a little kindness and patience might get you some tools.
The really dumb thing I did'nt do was to buy the 1948 TC after I had it running.

Neat story Colin. I'm sure someone bought the TC who has really enjoyed it. Your loss is his (her's) gain.

The only spanner and socket you really need is 1/4 W, for the head of the metric 8x1mm bolts, which I believe is about 13.45 mm.

Thanks gentlemen. ebay is a great tool, isn't it? I bought the tools from GB and already have them! I'd like to get Wentworth and Phillips into a duel! ...with Lucas.
