MG TD TF 1500 - Muffler research

In one of the guides to tuning an XPAG engine, the writer points out that the first thing to do to improve engine performance is to make sure that air can flow freely into the engine (by using less restrictive air filters) and to make sure the exhaust can freely flow out.
Seems to me that the biggest restriction on the exhaust side of the equation is the muffler. Can anyone recommend a particular muffler that is the least restrictive? Apart from none at all, of course :)
I read through the archives and most people seem to like the products Moss sells, but I was wondering if there were other ones even less restrictive on the market.

Geoffrey, a lot of people correlate open pipe to increased performance..the catch is the engines are designed and tuned with a certain level of exhaust restriction/resistance to flow and on the intake side you are limited by valve size in regard to the engine breathing freely..so without some design detail and a dyne to test the theory, you can spend time and $$ to achieve no effect and in many cases decrease the engines efficiency. This is why mechanical engineers spend so much on college. Regards, Tom

Geoffrey, No. Forget about the muffler, air filters perhaps.
What you do need is;
1) a 4.30-4.785 ring & pinion, or crown wheel & pinion.
This will let you drive at speeds that we normally drive at today.
2) a compression Ratio of about 9.3 : 1.
More power as the engine was designed for lower octane fuel than we have today.
3) A new camshaft, that has an improved profile that lets more air & fuel in & more fuel & air out.
If interested I have the best camshafts for these engines.
From stock to all out race, no one else offers a camshaft equal to my Abingdon Performance camshafts.

Len, it's on my wish list. If you want to trade for a brand new website, email me at geoffreybaker at cox dot net. :)

All of the T type mufflers I've messed around with are wide open "glasspack" style. Just the right compromise- hardly any restriction and a great exhaust tone.

The newer stainless are larger dia than the old ones I've swapped out.

There's a lot to be said about installing tubular headers, but the cast XPAG manifolds aren't all that bad.

Len - do I read your comment above correctly, to say that a 9.3:1 CR is recommended with your cams? I have often wondered what was the optimal CR with a roller cam, since with one of my superchargers the recommended CR is closer to 8:1. What CR would you recommend for a blown engine with your cam?

Thanks very much.

Tom, 8:1 with a blower, or supercharger, 9.3 : 1 for all naturally aspirated engines, for all camshafts except race camshafts.
