MG TD TF 1500 - Moss is the Best

About a year ago I rebuilt the steering rack and bought rubber boots from a T Series supplier - not Moss. I recently started to smell burning oil and there was a drip on the floor close to the master cylinder (my car is a RHD). I thought this was coming from the engine side plate and travelling over the bell housing but the oil was gear oil rather than engine. Eventually I identified the problem as a split steering rack boot. Gear oil was being flung back, hitting the exhaust and then wetting the chassis near the brake cylinder. I ordered a new boot from Moss Bradford at 4.0opm yesterday and it was with me at 10.00am today. Unlike the other one I had purchased, which was a universal one with various sized ends which had to be cut down, this was the real thing. It is made from proper rubber and the ends fit the rack and tie rod without any trimming. Full marks to Moss.

The thing I like about Moss (USA) is that any issues I've had with their products have quickly been resolved. No company is going to provide perfect goods or services 100% of the time. It is how they handle those problems that determines if I will deal with them again.

I certainly don't want to get in the middle of yet another debate over the quality of Moss products, but FWIW I bought Moss steering rack boots for my car in 2008 when I was just starting to bring it out of its 30 year hibernation. I didn't get the car back on the road until 2014, but I have driven it regularly since then and the boots are still holding up well with no evidence of cracks or deterioration.

The universal boot I had fitted during the rebuild was shiny black. The one from Moss is a mat black similar to tyres. I think the problem with the universal boot is the one size fits all. Each end is stepped from a small to large diameter and you cut off steps until you achieve the correct size. With the proper boot there is a lip to prevent the clips slipping off, the universal one does not have these. It is also longer than the original, fine when the steering extends it but turn the in the other direction and the corrugations bind on each other. I think this is why mine split.

I won't risk again incurring the wrath of the pro Moss US brigade by posting the list of parts that members of the M.G. Restorers Association, the M.G. Car Club of Sydney & others here believe should be avoided.
