MG TD TF 1500 - More best spark plugs

Sorry Guys

I know there is plenty of info in the archives but has opinion changed about what is the best type of spark plug for the xpag TD motor.

I have been reading about the Iridium tipped plugs which get a really good write up. Any experience on the board ????

Clive, I am running a set of Bosch platinum single tips and alternate with a set of older Champions. I bought the Bosch just to try. For the amount and the way I drive the car -- I can't really tell any difference.

Clive!

I have been working on XPAGs for nearly 40 years. I have always used Champion plugs L86C for the 1/2" reach and N-5 for the 3/4' reach. I always gap the plugs at 0.035". My experience with the platinum plugs is very poor. In MGs the platinum plugs seem to foul more than those old Champions.

Clive,I have had TFs for over thirty years and have used Champion plugs with total success.I feel some owners may blame the plugs for fouling when often there are other underlying causes of problems.

I've had great success with NGK plugs. The BP6ES for the 3/4" reach heads, and BP6HS for the 1/2" reach. They're usually available at NAPA for a reasonable price. I replace them once per season (~3,000 miles) just for general principles.

Ok guys, maybe it seems a stupid question but,

why are there 2 different lengths of plugs, is that for different models and how do you know which is for which

Clive, the TC head and early TD head used 1/2 inch; those heads often have casting number 22952. Later heads, usually casting number 168422, use the 3/4 inch.

And heads have been swapped from motor to motor, for various rebuilding purposes, so you can't go strictly by 'early motor, late motor'.

Hmmmm :
Had been running N-5's ...but they fouled
easly. Switched to Bosch Platium and they seemed to work great. Just had total re-build done this year. The BP6ES that were in the car fouled with just over 200 miles.
Going to try the Bosch again.
I'm curious as to if anybody feels one better than another if running a pertronix instead of points?
John ...any comments here?
Maybe I will try all three for 200 miles each without touching anything else and see what they look like!

I have also found modern Bosch Iridium and plus 4 plugs perform very well at first start/running wise, but tend to foul up in a couple of hundred miles. I followed your method and gapped a set of NGK BP6ES's at 035". My XPAG 1250 is fitted with a Pertronix E.I unit and normally starts instantanaously, but it showed some reluctance to fire from cold with the regapped plugs. Once started and warmed up though, the engine idled 100rpm higher than before. (900 rather than 800). I reduced the gap to 026" to improve the starting and idle rpm returned to the original 800. I think these modern plugs are a bit cold for our old engines. I'm going to run a hotter BP5ES and a BP4ES with a pair of BP6ES's to see which stays cleaner.

Well ...the Bosch Platinum F6DC have been in there for over 400 miles last weekend.
No sign of fouling (haven't "pulled" them yet to "look") ...but the TF had fouled the NGK's so badly they were missing.
I think the car is still running a little rich, so I ordered a coloure tune. Think I will try this little experament again after tunning the carbs with that when it gets here!
