MG TD TF 1500 - MGTD Lurches when turned off

Hi Folks,

I have just begun to have a funny problem. When I shut the motor off (turn the ignition key off) the car gives a slight lurch. If I switch on and off again, without starting, it may repeat. A third on and off and it doesn't happen.
If I start the car and let it run a moment and turn it off it usually lurches as before.
Also, when I restart the car, after it has lurched, the fuel pump runs excessively, as though one or both float bowls are empty.
Anybody got a clue as to what's happening here?
Thanks. Ted

Ted,
Please describe "Lurch",,, is it that the car actually "lurches" (moves) foward? Or are you decscribing the engine continuing to run for a few revolutions after you shut off the ignition?

Hi Steve,
No the car doesn't run on. When the ignition is turned off there's just a slight aftershock (bump) - kind of forward going but no real degree of movement either forward or backward.
Also, as I said, this repeats (once or twice) merely by switching the ignition key to ON and then OFF without starting the engine.

what happens if the electrical cable to the starter is disconnected from the under bonnet starter switch when you do all of your on/off switch movement? in other words...start the car, disconnect the cable (tie it off so it doesn't flop around) do your driving and when you are done, the car is warmed up...shut it off and see what happens. tom

Ted;; Do you have standard ignition or electronic? We had this problem with Johnson outboard motors. The ignition module was extra sensitive and woud fire the ingition. It sometimes was sensitive enough so that by merely turning the ket to on and actuating the electric choke the engine would start. Being a two stroke it could start in reverse direction also.
This warning was in an Outboard Marine service bulletin warning.

Hi Tom,
I will try your test on the starter motor later this afternoon if possible, otherwise it will wait a day or so for fair weather to return.

Hi Sandy,
I wondered about whether I should confess to my pertronix ignition but thought I would just spell out the symptoms without adding any levels of complexity. But I wasn't surprised that someone would ask. I'm inclined to discount the Pertronix, the car's been running fine for a year without any such symptom. However, I'll recheck module searing and rotor seating and report back.

Thank you both.
