MG TD TF 1500 - MG-TF dash

Photos, hopfully!
This dash is in a 55, something doesn't look right. Do you think it's a home made one and not original? I know a 54 I've seen is compleatly different. PJ

Paul,
The turn signal switch is a little bit too far to the right. (You're likely to get a bunch of similar replies.)
This is definitely home-made. I don't think there was any difference in the TF dash based on its year. Not sure what they did with the wipers, though, since you activate them from inside the gloveboxes. I certainly can't throw stones, since we have modified ours some.

The instrument piece is stock although the color is wrong and it appears the chrome trim is missing, Turn signal is close to where it's supposed to be. grab handle ok. Rest of the dash is home made? wood replacement.

LaVerne Downey

Paul,
Lavern's looks correct for a TF
Scott has added glove doors. Not stock but a very nice addition.
From what I know there were only two colors from the factory for the metal dash in a TF; red or green.
These were not body colors but a brighter green and a brighter red than body colors. The center portion of all which holds the instruments was a bronze color that matches the steering wheel hub and center piece.
The original bronze color is very hard to match. The moss bronze color is definitely lighter than original.

Anyone know where a 55/54 dash could possibly be obtained? I've searched the Internet with no results. I'd probably buy the car in question if an original dash could be found, seeing how I would want to do a frame off restoration. All the numbers in this car are correct, it's just the dash that's wrong. PJ
Paul Jennings

Moss has it. Just depends on how bad you want it.

Paul,
It Depends how much the car is selling for.
A frame off gets pricy. If the original price is fair
The dash cost is peanuts in the big scheme of things.
Also a dash may come up on Ebay at some time.
Look close for a "complete car". I notice no tranny cover.
If you know of any local guys familiar with TF's, it may behove you get some help with quality.

Wow Dan

I'm happy to hear that someone else thinks the Moss bronze instrument panel paint is too light. I was talked into painting mine the Moss color after I used a darker GM paint code that I liked better, and matched the paint under my choke bezel.

Maybe I'll revisit that one year.

Paul, Abindgon Spares lists a TF dash for $450. Call them and check to make sure it is in stock, could be used original or repro. George

Dave,
By any chance do you remember the GM paint code that you used originally?

Paul:

I have extra original TF dash, (primed) and instruments. The center console and instruments look good, but wrong colour. Email me

On a somewhat related note, I have three--count 'em three--DPO holes in my center console, all currently plugged with mojo knobs that aren't connected to anything. So I have 4 "A" knobs on my dashboard, none of which actually do anything. With as many things as I want/need to do, the money to replace the console just ain't happening anytime soon. But it bugs the crap out of me, so I'm probably going to try and figure out some way to patch it up. Any opinions on the best way to do so?

TF's also had the Biscuit colour on the metal dash available not just Red or Green.

Andy, Craig Seabrook (The Whitworth Shop)reparied an oversized hole in my TD dash panel, and finished and painted it. Beautiful work. George

The center section that holds the instuments can also come in a satin finish black. Mike D.

Scott,
Love your doors. What did you do about wiper switch? Still stock?
I have an old set of period accessory wood doors with locks on them, (a pain to get at) I put a toggle under the dash for my wipers. Someday I hope to not be refered to as "the DPO" when they unbolt my "aux" panel and throw it away! Better than drilling holes in the dash!

LaVerne's is very correct! Hole for turn signal switch was "cut" into both sides at factory (LHD/RHD) and the M.G. badge installed in Abingdon to the remaining "hole". Tach was also installed nearest driver dependent on LHD/RHD. Been some dissusion on here as to if "start & choke" were also changed. I don't recall if we ever figured that out for sure or not. (Is anything "for sure" on these cars?) LOL
Just part of the fun!

OBTW:
Time for my yearly shout out to Larry Brown!
Over Ten years and I still think of you every time I get behind the wheel. My dash was missing that chrome trim when purchased. He hooked me up with one.
Thanks Larry!
David Sheward

Hi Dave,
The wipers are still positioned and parked with the knobs in the gloveboxes. But instead of using the one knob as a switch, we have added a toggle switch that's on a hidden panel under the dash. Such things put us well on the way to being DPO's. Still, if the TF ever does go outside the family, it will be accompanied by voluminous documentation of the various bastardizations. I think my dad is up to revision-level 15 of his CAD wiring diagram!

Don,

the paint code I found was in a rattle can by Plasti-kote (I believe a division of Valspar) and was GM 7157.

Pictures on my website, although you know how that alters the color due to variances.
