MG TD TF 1500 - MG-TD Restoration Manual by Horst Schach

I'm looking for a copy of The MG-TD Restoration Manual by Horst Schach. The New England T Register no longer carries the manual and my search of book sellers and parts sellers has proven fruitless.
If anyone has one for sale, please let me know.
I have the T Series Restoration Guide by Green.

Gary - You can get the restoration book by Schach from Moss Motors. Look on page 34 of their catalog. Good luck - Dave

I have been told this book is a good reference. As yet no copies found from moss or otherwise. I have seen a couple on ebay but I stopped bidding at $60 US. If the book is that good would a reprint be in order?? Is there enough interest out there?

I have never ordered from them, but the following Internet store lists Horst Schach's book for sale.

Thanks Larry you are correct, British Tool Box do advertise the book, in fact they confirmed my order and took payment. When the package arrived they had substituted at different restoration guide. When I brought this to their attention they said the book had not been available for "some time".

Gary,
I think that when the book came out the NEMGTR pretty much controlled distribution. When it first came out I tried to get a copy from Borders and after 6 weeks they told me to order direct from the T register!! If the T register doesn't have a copy then your best bet is to pick up a used one where ever you can find it. It is an excellent guide and while $60 is a lot for a $32 book (retail), you will probably save the difference many times over. Perhaps if the NEWT gets enough requests from this board & others they will do a reprint. Maybe a small email campaign to www.nemgt.org might help!

Since I seem to have inadvertently led people down a dead end road with my British Tool Box posting, I will try to redeem myself. I sent Horst Schach an e-mail message asking about the availability of his restoration manual. I'll let you know what I hear.

Larry, I had ordered the book from British Tool Box over a month ago. Sorry if I gave the impression that you were being less than helpful. I appreciate the advice all the same. Thank you for your offer to contact the author. I will drop a line to the NEMGTR to survey the interest there.

I find it hard to believe that this book has simply disappeared from the sellers. I've tried BritBooks.com and Motorbooks.com (both sources I know had had it before) and found that it is no longer listed.

Maybe $60 isn't too much to pay if it's no longer available. I wish that I could help more.

I bought mine from motorbooks.com. Not sure if they still have it, but selection and service were good.

The book is definitely worthwhile.

Good luck, David

Testimonial: my wife's 53 TD sat up on blocks for over 23 years because I did not want to attempt a resto. When Horst's book came out, I bought it, read it cover to cover several times, joined a local club, and did a frame off resto that I am very pleased with by just following his book and picking up a few tech tips here and there.

I am now doing a frame off resto on a 61 MGA that I purchased in pieces and have a 68 mgc roadster sitting in the wings.

From my perspective, it was well worth whatever I paid for it back when.

Horst's book is quite good as it covers alot of things not found elsewhere. However from the originality standpoint there are mistakes.

For that you still need Clausager's "Original MGT Series" or can look at Chris Couper's site.

I have Schach's book and it is very interesting because it contain stopics not generally found in other books. However, there are some mistakes (not only from the point of view of orogonality) e.g. in the section about mechanical restoration, some parts in the pictures are described as "good" when instead they belong to the scrap pile.

Gary,
One of the Horst Schach T-type restoration books is up for auction on e-Bay. The starting price is $5.00, but it does have a reserve price. The item number is 1815042423. I already have one, but if I didn't I wold be willing to bid $60.00 for it.

I have contacted Horst Schach (thank you Larry)and the news is good. He has some remaining copies. I also encouraged him to consider a third edition. The NEMGTR are not considering a reprint at this time. To be fair, I did tell Horst that his books were selling for considerably more than jacket price on ebay. This may also give him an idea of the interest out there.

Brian Smith sent me a note recommending that I try Octagon Motor Group in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Brian had checked their stock and they had one copy left.
It is in the mail to me as I write this message.
Thank you all for your help.
Cheers,

Gary,

There is a copy of Schach's book for sale on EBay right now. The "Buy It Now" option is available. A steal for only $125!!! If you're willing to pay that, give me a call. I have some swamp land for sale.
