MG TD TF 1500 - MG TD Mark II air cleaner

I am attempting a frame up restoration on a MK II. I haven't been able to come across any pics or parts that I know are for the MK II, does anyone have any info on this or pictures of what it was supposed to look like?

The most notable differences from a TD to a TD Mk II would be the dual SU fuel pumps and the dual Andrex shocks. I may have some photos of these features. Otherwise they both look about the same. There are some internal differences that wouldn't be obvious from the outside. The Mk II had the larger SU carbs and larger valves.

The T Type Restoration Handbook, edited by Knudson has a good description of the differences.

Exactly what type of pictures are you looking for?

Sorry, I just realized you are looking for some pictures of the Mk II air cleaner. All the pictures I have of the Mk II do not show the air cleaner.

Thanks for all of the pics and quuik responses. Is the larger aircleaner the same as the TF? My project came without any aircleaner and am not sure what to use. Joel

Joel - Be careful there, TF's did not use an oil bath air cleaner like the TD, they used 'pancake' style dry elements. I may know of a couple 'original' sets around, if you need them just drop a note. tfp

I have a '53 MK II and it came with 2 pancake air filters, covered with chrome Hellings caps (available from Moss). Let me know if you need a picture.

I have the correct manifold for the MkII air cleaner. It has larger diameter holes that match the larger carbs. It is not for sale, since I'm still looking for the MII air cleare, which is 9" in diammeter rather than 7". Am also looking for a set of Andrex shocks, in any condition- if you need pictures let me know. I am considering manufacturing them myself-- if I can get a set to copy.

Ira- NOT all TD MK II's used the 9" oil bath. The early MK II's used a standard 7" and in some cases a 7" (3) piece can was used. The is a link somewhere from Steve Swarts who is compiling info on this subject. regards Tom

Thanks. I have a late TD with an early engine. Maybe the air cleaner that I have is ok.

Hi Ira - Yes I think that is fine, it is a late car. Would you be able to take some digitals and send them to me of your 9" air cleaner ass'y & alum intake 'gooseneck' when you get a chance, I will take some pics of the 7" 2-piece & 7" 3-piece air cleaners and send them to you for your files. rgds tom p

i have an early '51 td that the PO put a large valve head in. now that i am overhauling her i could leave everything as is and have an easy breathing XPAG or i thought i could have a bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing as it were if i could add the larger SU's (a friend gave me a set) and still have an oil bath and aluminum goose neck. is that set up possible? with that set up could i do it without the cowl bump? some one did send me pics, but i could not and my computer could not find a way to open the pics. darn computer (operator) tom
