MG TD TF 1500 - MG Bronze

This is probably for UK subscribers only.

Does anyone know of a current car colour which matches the bronze used on the dash and steering wheel of a TD. I would like to take a trip down to my local Halfords and buy an aerosol.

Thanks

Moss USA sells it, part #220-530. I'd bet Moss UK has it too.

The bronze color is also identical to a honda exterior color. The local parts stores sell 'touch up' paints under various brands. They won't have the same brands in the UK, but they should have something similar.

On the advice of Bill Jones, who runs a restoration shop near here, I bought some of the honda 'clone' paint (replicolor brand, I think). I hear that the paint Moss sells is hard to get an even look and texture. The paint that I used wasn't easy, and I repainted [the center portion of] my TF dash about 3 times before I was satisfied with the results.

Jan,
I used the Moss paint and am pleased with the results. Several things to remember: warm but not hot weather if you do it outside, meticulous prep work on the bare metal, and several light coats, letting them dry in between. Lastly, I used a gizmo that screwed onto the paint can and let me use a trigger to apply the paint instead of the top button on the can. Several trial passes to get the hang of it, and it worked great!
Good luck,
Rob

Jan,
I recently painted my center dash using the Moss paint, and it turned out well. Several light coats does the job, so be patient. Don't try to make the first coat look like the final coat should look.

Take your point about getting the paint from a MG parts supplier but have bought 'specialised' aerosaols previously and they just didn't compare with the Duplicolour ones available in the local auto accessory shops. One is particular was useless - it was supposed to replicate cadminium plating and I purchased it by mail order to paint the brake servo and my MG B. Pressing the button on the can was more like turning a tap on rather a fine spray. On the other hand I have recently touched in the paint on my wife's car with an aersol from a local shop and the finish was excellent. I have rmoved the centre boss from the steering wheel and will use it to match with a modern colour.

Hello,

I would search for a suitable bronze shade in the closest-to-your-home paint store. The first great advantage of using paints from a renowned dealer is that you can see the actual shade before buying, and the second is to be able to combine other products like primer or thinner of the same family, without unexpected aftermaths.

Only in special cases, when the colour or shade is very specific or unusual would I go to a MG (or whatever other car make) parts supplier.

Well, I thought that bronze colour for the steering wheel was one of such cases, and I ordered one can from Moss. The result is a too light shade, which has little to do with the original, as I can see in other cars (perhaps I should give more coats, as suggested by Dick).

If somebody finds a suitable colour code, please share it with us.

Regards.

I'll pull the code off the paint can that I used tonight, when I get home. It's on a shelf (somewhere)in my garage. I don't remember whether the brand is Replicolor or Duplicolor, but I'll include that info too.

The bronze paint is Plasti-Kote 5317. It also says 'Honda' on the sticker. I kinda doubt you can get that brand in the UK. sorry...

Jesus: You are right. The Moss color is way to light for a TD dash. May be ok for TF.

Took the steering wheel centre piece down to the local auto store and compared the colour with their range of aerosol touch up paints. Current Volswagen Metallic Sand is a very close colur to TD Bronze. All the other ones I checked were too gold - the MG colour has a red tint which is quite obvious when compared with the colour caps on other gold / bronze aerosols

I used a Ford Pinto color back in the 70's. It was Ford Ginger by name. Pretty close and a lot darker than the Moss color. It was a dupli color.

I have managed to find a color that appears to be a match for the original color, or at least it matches the original pieces that I have. The brand name is Plasti-kote, it is made in the US and the code is GM 7166.

This matches the original pieces from my car and also a steering wheel center that I obtained through Ebay. Like others have found, some of the colors are too "gold"

Thanks for all the responses.

I roughed up the chrome in the centre with emery paper, placed masking tape all round the edge, cut this to a perfect shape with a razor blade and sprayed it with my VW sand colour. Looked superb until I tried to fit the small inspection lamp sockets - corner of the paint lifted and I was able to peel off the full sheet of paint. I now have a very accurate template of the centre panel ! Will try again using a dust coat of etch primer. I have some that is red oxide in colour - hope it wont leave an edge aroung the masking.

It's all good practice for when I start my tank sides though.

Hope the primmer and paint are from the same maker....I have a "matched set" of templates from the inside of my bumpers when I painted them! Bead-blasted the insides ...primed then painted with a "chrome spray"....(never cared for that "surface rust look" on the insides of the bumpers)...the first 2 paints selected did not "play well" together and peeled off...back to the bead-blaster and the paint store!
Found a clear coat as well and with a nice coat of wax I hit them with a hose and the dirt slides right off now.
Cheers,

Best to find a primer that will adhear to sanded chrome. many of the aircraft primers will do. yes make sure that it is compatible with the paint. ie lacquer primer will work with all paints. Not the other way around

Just posted a message about the transfer for the headlamp switch. Got me thinking about the dash panel - wouldn't a piece of bronze coloured self adhesive vinyl - the sort used for signmaking be just perfect. It could be stuck down and then trimmed around the bead with a razor blade. Anyone out there run a sign making business ?

Very interresting discovery this Volswagen Metallic Sand. I tried to find one this weekend but the book of aerosol paintings contains hundreds of VW shades and no one says Metallic Sand. Have you got the VW reference or the make and the reference of your aerosol?
Jean-Marc Thély

Jean,

The colour I have used is VW Sand Met 454702. I bought it from a chain of auto shops called Halfords - it was their own make but I do know they only stock current colours.

Just a point if you are painting the dash board centre use the tip that was on the bulletin board a short time ago - put masking tape around the edge and overlap the centre. Then run a razor blade around the bead and strip off the tape in the centre. Will give you a really nice clean edge.

Au revoir
