MG TD TF 1500 - Mann spin-on oil filter for TD

I learned of Mann oil filters at a tech session over the weekend and they were described as top of the line, even better than Wix.

I've got a spin-on adaptor for my TD Mk II and have been using the Fram PH-3600 but everybody tells me Fram is not very good.

I want to upgrade, and was going to pick up a Wix 51516, but before I do, I want to find out if anyone out there has used a Mann spin-on filter on a TD.

According to the manufacturer, the Mann equivalent to Fram PH-3600 is W 719/12.

I found them available at cfpfilters.com for $6.12 (pretty inexpensive for "top of the line")

Here is a study on oil filters by Russ W. Knize, he tells you every thing you ever wanted to know about oil filters. He has purchased most brands and cut them apart to see how they are built. He shows the pic of the sections. Makes you wonder about Fram. Although he dose not list Mann, you could probably email him for some info? Happy hunting John

Brian, the Wix 21515 (NAPA 1515) is a direct replacement for the 21516/1516 and provides better filtration. It's somewhat larger externally, but has the same thread and seal.

The NAPA/Wix Interchange list shows the Mann & Hummel Model W719/12 as equivalent to a NAPA 1342. It's dimensions are just about the same as the 1516. The Mann & Hummel W940/1 or W940/10 equate to a NAPA 1515.

Ok there are a lot of numbers here.

So does the Wix 21515 replace Wix 51516 or are both available and useable on the TD?

And are both Mann W 719/12 and W940/1 or W940/10 all useable filters on the TD?

Bryan -- sorry about my using the '2' prefix instead of the '5' for NAPA vs. Wix. The filters are made by Gard Corp. The Wix 51515 is identical with the NAPA 1515, and the Wix 51516 is the NAPA 1516. Dimensionally, all three of the Mann filters should work fine.

Among the important dimensions are the mounting thread for screwing them on. All filters mentioned are 3/4-16. The 1515 is 5.178" long, the 1516 is 4.840", the 1342 is 4.828". The o.d. of the 1515 is 3.67", the 1516 is 2.923" and the 1342 is 2.921". The o.d. and i.d. of the sealing gaskets are just about the same.

This data is taken from a NAPA Gold Master Filter catalog. BTW, it's the air filters where the Wix prefix vs. NAPA is '2'.

I too have a Grunau spin-on oil filter adapter that uses the Fram PH3600 replacement cartridge. I read Russ Knize's 2003 article and this started me thinking. I've since read everything I could find, much of it more recently dated, because I'm determined to have the best possible oil filtration for my TF, that I can find. By comparison (to the Yank engines), out little engines turn at fairly high revs and run hot too, so clean oil is a must.

The boys on the old Mustang, Yamaha-engined SHO and the turbo K-Car (Russ Knize) BBs, all point to the Delco Ultraguard UPFL400A as being the very best and unfortunately, the Fram PH3600 as one of the worst! Regrettably the UPFL400A has been long discontinued, so I'm still trying to find some NOS. So far, no success. Apparently the replacement UPF44 is a "nearly as good" filter.

The next in line appears to be the K&N HP2009 and then the Mobil 1 ML209. And an Honourable Mention goes to the AMSOIL ADF34. These filters all should fit the Moss and Grunau spin-on assemblies, and will fall into the $10 to $15 (US) range.

The criteria in selecting a good filter are a) small particle filtration, b) large filtration area, and c) media. The 4 or 5 filters above, all have symthetic media, are greater than 300 square inches in filtration area and limit particle flow-through to 15 microns, with the Delco Ultraguard UPFL400A passing only an 8 micron particle. d) High filtration with minimal delta P (pressure drop across the filter) is desirable and that's why these filters combine all the attributes needed for complete filtration

Another consideration is e) preventing the dirty oil on the filtered oil side of the filter, from draining back to the sump, when pressure is removed (engine turned off), and apparently, the Fram PH3600 has been shown to allow this, although I'm not completely convinced as most Mustangs, SHOs and K-Cars used a verticle filter arrangement, while our Ts are fitted horizontally.

I don't plan to go into the details of my choices as this information is readily available at the web-sites of the Mustang club, the SHO club, Russ Knize, and many others. I spent many hours arriving at this decision, but you just may want to do your own.

If anybody has some Delco Ultraguard UPFL400A filters squirrelled-away, let me know.
