MG TD TF 1500 - Locking Wire

Hi
Please can you have a look at the images below of the locking wire inside the recon gearbox I am about to fit (I couldn't resist a look inside to see if it was all there). The wire looks far too thick to me (see image of locking wire on speedo drive). Should I change the locking wire for a smaller gauge???
Comments and advice greatly appreciated
John

My opinion is that your wires can be improved upon. I would use stainless wire, and would be sure that all bolts and the wires holding them are tight, and all slack removed. Vibration will break regular wire - especially loose wire that can vibrate and rattle - and on an engine it will find its way to the bottom of the sump, at the oil pickup. on a transmission it can get into the gears. Not good.

If the wire fits through the hole in the bolt it is the correct size. I wouldn't reduce the diameter. Best place to source small quantities of lockwire (it comes on a large spool with about 100 metres more than you need), is at an aircraft maintenance hanger. When lockwiring the camshaft bolts I got mine from Bankstown airport using airport transfers tunbridge wells here in Sydney. The guy wouldn't take any money. Agree with Tom about the method used on your gearbox. Google ECI Technical Note Safety Lockwire Practices for a range of illustrations on how to go about it. Cheers

Don't know if it's right or wrong ... I used 0.041" stainless steel safety wire inside my gearbox and on the speedo drive. 0.032" is often recommended for general lock wiring in various applications.

I agree with all of the above posts..I have been a licensed and practicing aircraft mechanic and inspector for 40yrs..but having said that..it looks like this wire has done the job for decades and will probably continue to do so. Regards, Tom

Thanks for all the good advice

Would you believe that this box has just been thru a £900 rebuild by the person i bought it from . You can see why I was a little bit worried when looking at the locking wire
I now wonder when what it's going to be like when it's fitted to the car next week
I will keep you up to date

I'm always a bit wary to post wiring pictures because of the tough crowd, but this is how I wired mine. ;-)
