MG TD TF 1500 - Let's assume I screwed up....

Hypothetically speaking, (yeah right) if I reverse wired my new fuel pump, have I fried it, or not?
Stan Griffis

I believe you knocked out the spark supression circuit, shortening the life of the points. But we will have to wait for Dave DuBois to chime in.

warmly,
dave
Dave Braun

Dave - I bought the electronic one from Moss, if that matters.
Stan Griffis

MOre than likely it is gone. If you do that with a Pertronics I know it will fry it. It to is solid state.
TRM Maine

Stan - Fear not, the all electronic pumps will not run on the wrong polarity, but it does not harm them. It is the same on the solid state conversions that I do, reverse polarity does not harm them either.

If by "reverse wired", you put the black wire to the power terminal of the pump and the white wire to the ground side of the pump, you may have damaged the white wire to the pump and adjacent wires in the harness. Cheers - Dave
David DuBois

See? Dave DuBois knows (it rhymes). Dave, is this covered in one of your advice notes on your website? If not, maybe it could be.

"Dave DuBois knows" rhymes depending on how he pronounces DuBois. In New Orleans it would be "doobwhass"; in other parts of the country, "doobwhaa" ... in Franco-American Maine "doobose" would be correct...

As I've never met him, I'll wait for Dave DuBois to rule on this one too! :)
Geoff Baker

Geoff - For years we pronounced it "dooboys" until our kids harassed us into using the French pronunciation, doobwhaa".

Dave B. I have several updates that I want to make to my web site, all I need is some time to do it. Cheers - Dave

So how do listers pronounce "Des Moines"?? And why Ah kan saw instead of Ah kansas??
G.E. Love

The one that amazes me is Brett Favre. How the hell do you pronounce that Farve? What form of language requires you to reverse the position of the letters when you pronounce the word?
LED DOWNEY

"What form of language requires you to reverse the position of the letters when you pronounce the word?"

Obviously, Mississippian...you mean y'all don't?
Gene Gillam

Des Moines is "de-moin"
while the Des Plaines River here in Illinois is pernounced just like its spelled... Go figure!
J. McLeod

Must be from Missisippi also

Laveranues Coles.. prenounced Laverniess

What the hell happened to the "A" and when did "ues" become ee-s?
LED DOWNEY

Arkansas River in Arkansas: Are Can Saw... Arkansas River in Kansas: Are Can Sess

Here in rural Pa., I once heard my sister-in -law refer to an illness a friend of hers had as a DWADONELL. I couldn't for the life of me work out what it was until a doctor friend of mine told me it is the local pronounciation of the word DUODENAL!! ( DEW OH DEEN AL).

Later I asked her if, when she saw or heard a couple (and hear I mean the English use of the word meaning two and not the indeterminate number Americans infer when using the word} singing a song, would she say that she had heard a lovely DWA singing or if she would refer to a DWET!!! And, just to wrap this up, the word BUOY, pronounced by the English as BOY, and here a BOO EEEEE!!

Wonders will never cease. As Churchill said, "Two great countries divided only by a common language".
G.E. Love

Over the years I have learned that:

Mary/Merry Land .... is Marilan
Louweeseanna .... is Looseiana
Ore egon .... Ore gone

( England and America are two countries separated by a common language.-George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950) )

A woman from Brooklyn (deese and dose) once told me she could tell I wasn't from New York by my accent (Washington, D.C.), I am still laughing about that 35 years later.
James Neel

Bernard Shaw made a lot of hay about the vagaries of language. Just think of the overture to "My Fair Lady," which was based on "Pygmalion." The age-old question of "Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?"

Monsieur Du Bois, just remember what Mr Shaw wrote - the French don't care what you say, so long as you pronounce it correctly.

Cheers

Translation from French is (of wood)
SANDY SANDERS

No wonder we can never find anything in the archives!
We do get "off" subject from tyme to tyme don't we. LOL
Don't take that wrong...I'm as guilty as anybody (if not more so!)
Part of what makes this BBS so much fun.
I still can't believe Stan "screwed up" ...nobody here EVER does that!
(at least not in the Buckeye State)
Cheers & Best Regards ,

Dave S. - You got that right. We are reverting to childhood - it doesn't take much to distract us. Cheers - Dave 'of the Woods' DuBois
David DuBois

Thank you, Gordon. I stand corrected. Must be a senior moment which seem to be occuring with greater frequency these days.

GBS it was, but it really should have been WSC.
G.E. Love

Looks like I'm the only one fluent in French to offer my comments, but Dave is very close with "doobwhaa". Technically it should be pronounced "dzoobwhaa" with the zed almost silent.

BTW the literal translation means 'made' (understood) "of wood"! Example: Je me suis fait du bois ... I am made of wood!

I can't get over what an eclectic group we've turned out to be!! I'll bet the honky Porsche or Ferrari guys aren't this well informed. They probably don't care either.

Gord,

Don't forget to make allowances for that Quebecois accent. Snark, snark.

No the Porsche guys are all fumbling about bragging on horsepower, as in "Mein Porsche hat einen sehr großen Motor." Sie verstehen?

Dave Braun (pronounced 'Brown') hey, it's Deutsch.

If you ever go to Boise...it is pronounced Boysee...not Boyzee
