MG TD TF 1500 - Lel Leston steering wheel hub

Hi folks,

I found a Les Leston steering wheel this past weekend at a British show and the gentleman I bought it from took it off his mgtf. I was wondering if the hub would work on a TD also and if there were any other MGs this should work on.

The reason Im asking is I am not MG knowledgeable being a big Healey guy

The steering shaft connecting to the steering wheel is common to both the TD and TF.

What is a Les Leston steering wheel?

The Les Leston wheel is an aftermarket item from the 1960s. They were often fitted to Minis as an inexpensive alternative to the motolita.

These are the ones to go for. You see them in E Type Jaguars and Astons. They are the ones with aluminium spokes and a laminated wooden rim held in place with aluminium rivets.

Still think the original T type wheels look the best though.

Mike: I must have a Lel Leston wheel on my TD. Up to this point I did not know what the engraved LL stood for. Mine is a wood wheel with flat polished aluminium spokes. You can find a pic here.

Is this similar to yours?

The hub is cast metal and wrinkle finished. It accepts the standard TD/TF centerpiece.

Is that lil' guy you in pic #7 B&W)?
Very cool if it is that you have the "history" going back that far!

Boy, would I ever like to have one of those on my car! Nice picture, Chris.

Motolita wood rim steering wheels are still avaiable brand new. I fitted one to my Lotus Elan about two years ago. It was a Christmas present from the family so am not certain of the cost but think it was about £100 ($160). Prob better checking out before bidding over the top via on line auction.
