MG TD TF 1500 - LaVerne's Travails

As mentioned in the GOF 2012 thread, LaVerne had a fuel pump problem while traveling from St Charles, IL to Carthage, MO.

If you're going to have problems it helps to know where to finally break down...and be traveling in the company of someone with a spare fuel pump...well, not exactly spare but located on a car being trailered!

After several stops along the interstate when the car kept losing power LaVerne finally pulled off at an ESSO station in the middle of nowhere...but WITH a picnic pavilion close by. Here's a few photos of LaVerne and Dan Craig working on the car while I supervised (elderly guys get to do that).

Hard at work...LaVerne on the left, Dan on the right.

Temperature in the sun was almost 100 degrees.

Not sure what was happening with Dan here...

LaVerne swapping fittings...Dan's wife (and mine) patiently waiting.

The wheel goes back on and we're soon to be back on the road.

We'd left St Charles at 8:15 in the morning and arrived in Ozark, MO at approximately 11 at night. LaVerne's TF didn't skip a beat after the fuel pump was swapped out and he ran that car between 65 and 75 miles an hour for about 7 hours. I was totally impressed.

The next morning we got up and went to the show in Carthage that was being put on by Dan's car club. LaVerne, after barely having time to rinse the dirt off managed to place 3rd out of a group of about 10 T-series (TC, TD, TF).

I understand he did have a problem after leaving Carthage, heading for Colorado and ended up with an after market fuel pump...

Got any shots of him putting that jack back in the bonnet tool box? Looks slightly larger than the one I carry! (And a lot cleaner!)

Must have been "fuel problem day" (27th) I was in much the same mode with an Austin 100 that day.
We had leaking tank, chaffed lines, and bad pump.
Don't you love the feel of gas running down your arm into your armpit? (Dan?)

The ironic thing is I have seen LaVerne's trailer/truck setup and it's a doozy! Guess we know who has more bollocks in this group though. But what about that squeeze bulb "emergency" fuel pump, eh? I built one and hope to never use it.

Are those tools Whitworth? Way too clean!

LaVerne, let us know when you get home safely. I'm on my fifth day of rebuilding my front door pillar (again) from scratch if it makes you feel any better.

Gene and that phone. Man can't even break wind without documentation. Kind of an odd pump failure and a bit tough to get a handle on. The fact that the 500 mile pump from my car failed after 600 miles on the TF makes me wonder about a tank restriction. Least he was where he could get a substitute which got him back across the mountains. Time will tell as he investigates further in the comfort and safety of his own shop. Sure like fuel pump service on a TD better than a TF - handy that mine has 2 pumps for sharing on the road. And yes,Dave - 91 octane will clean out yer pits. Great week with good people. Dan
