MG TD TF 1500 - Knockoffs

Are the TC, TD, TF knockoffs the same as the kind found on an MGA? Thanks!
Steve Simmons

TD/TF not the same as TC?

Not sure which one is the A's, haven't
experienced one with wires before, only discs.
Will

TDs did not come with wire wheels, so if one has been converted to wires, the knockoffs would be the same as either TF or MGA. Have you checked the part numbers in the Moss catalog as a comparison? Cheers - Dave
David DuBois

Moss online catalog says:

Fitted as original equipment to T-Series and MGAs, fine thread (12 threads per inch) knockoffs. Used on a variety of MGs.
Gene

Yeah, that's what I saw, Gene. It appears they are the same but I just listed a set on eBay and wanted to be sure I wasn't misleading anyone. They came off an MGA but they don't look like the knock-offs I've seen on MGAs before. They are more squared-off. They fit fine on the MGA so I thought either they are originals and the modern replacements are the wrong style, or they are T-series and somehow ended up on an A.
Steve Simmons

Steve,
For what it's worth...I purchased a set off ebay a few years back advertized as "orginial TF knock-off's" but when I went to install them noticed there was no "MG Octagon" as my orginials had. I decided not to use them and resold on ebay with a better description.

David S.,
I just got a 55 TF for Christmas and it came with a boatload of new parts. In one of the boxes, I found four new, in the package, knock offs. They all have the MG octagon in the center. Does this mean they are originals? (The ones on the car also have the octagons)
I am so excited about the car! Now I will have to watch the TD/TF section more often and ask a bunch of dumb questions.
Cleve

Cleve, Are you from Birmingham, Alabama or another Birmingham?
Jeff McWhirter

I have a box of 8 or 9 MG knockoff caps (2 sets with a spare). Some are fine thread, some are coarse. Some are pretty good, some are pretty bad. My MG has disc wheels, so I have no use for them. Anybody interested?
John Masters

Cleve,
How did you rate getting Santa to give you a TF for Christmas? All I got was a power drill!
Gene Burgess

Cleve,
<"Does this mean they are originals?">
Not sure if the "repros" have logo or not...maybe the ones I had without were just a generic "knock off" (pun intended!)
We are all curious about <"got a 55 TF for Christmas"> ... Many of us are "up for adoption" or willing to join a harrem!
Welcome to our litle "T" family!

I've learned a bit about knockoffs while trying to find some decent ones for my 54 TF. The original T series (TA thru TC & TF) all had the MG crest. TD's could get a retro kit that used TF parts and a hub adapter. The aftermarket ones sold by Moss, etc, also have the MG emblem. So the emblem doesn't neccesarily mean they are original. But if they don't have the emblem you can be sure they're not original T series. One way to tell an original is by looking at the threaded underside. The original production units always have a bunch of numbers and letters stamped on them. The aftermarket ones usually don't. I think that's true for almost all the parts we see from the aftermarket. (someone please correct me on that). I also read that at least on the TF, the original emblem was accented with red paint. And just to bore everyone with more trivia, a lot of people restore the edges of the knockoffs (the banged up part) by filing them smoooth before geting them rechromed. So if you look carefully some of the knockoff ears are slightly smaller or more pointed than others.

Terry

PS - I didn't see an MG in my Christmas stocking either. And Cleve, you might want to check the archive for the thread about how old us T owners are and how long we've had our cars. You'll find you've got lots of friends now.
Terry Jacobs

Terry,
Wouldn't happen to remember where you read about "original emblem was accented with red paint" would you? Never knew that. Something to do this winter whilst waiting for my "adoption papers" to come through!

Great site for info on your "nue babie"!

David - It was in the detail section of the MGTF site: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtf/mgtf_finishes.htm#brightwork

What are you adopting?

Hey thanks for all the notes. I got the TF for Christmas from an older gentleman who knew I had a few MGs. He said he knew I would be grateful and take care of it, so he signed the papers and gave me the car, with a bunch of new parts, books and related items. The engine has zero hours and the car itself is the product of a 1960s resto.
My wife could not understand that he just gave us the car and is still in shock!
David, I don't have the car in my garage yet, but the bill of sale shows the ID number as -----8353 and is a 1955 1500 TF. I have to make arangements to collect the car and make room in my garage. (that shouldn't take long)
Thanks for the site notes!
Cleve

Cleve, You never said which Birmingham you were from. I have a 52 TD.
Jeff McWhirter

Terry,
Just to clarify, the TF detail page you referred to doesn't really indicate that the MG crest engraved in the knockoffs was filled in with red. It is stating that the hubcaps of disc wheeled cars and the knockoffs of wire wheeled cars are chrome plated. The next entry states that the separate medallion on the hubcaps (of disc wheeled cars only) was buffed and had the background painted red. Note: this applies to the road wheels but not the spare which had an enameled medallion. Wire wheel knockoffs were engraved then plated, no paint was used on them.

Cleve -
Another request. Birmingham, England, Michigan, or Alabama?
Ken Martin

Sorry guys, (Ken and Jeff) I have to get used to checking the TD/TF section. Alabama, Pelham to be exact. Which part do you live in?
Jeff, my son-in-law works for Bellsouth on 280. How about you? Is that where you work or is that you provider?
Cleve

Cleve -- congratulations on the car!
Perhaps the rest of us could revisit the thread, how old are you and how long have you had your car and look for older owners without heirs whom we might befriend!

Cleve, I work for BellSouth but I don't work at the 280 building, but I live within a 1/2 mile from it. Would like to see your TF when you get it. I am new at this since I have only had my 52 TD since Feb. 2003. I have found out that there is a lot to learn, but there is alot of guys on this site that will help you. Hope to talk to you later.
