MG TD TF 1500 - Judson Supercharger

I may have the opportunity to save a Judson supercharger. The person who owns it bought it at a swap meet many years ago thinking it was for Triumph but thinks now it is MG. His shop is next door to my improvised spray booth for my paint work. Does anyone have one of these set ups that can take a few pics of the pieces and provide part #s for the intake , blower, carb adapter etc. It's not a piece I'll likely use but it would make wall art or be able to help someone else.

If you got it in good operable condition I'd almost have to buy it just 'cause of the name.

Bill, it should be the Judson MG-26 model.

Judson Superchargers are really pretty good blowers, though they are somewhat more noisy than a Wade or Rootes type supercharger. I have one for my 1100cc Morris Minor Traveler and it adds considerable HP. (Haddon Judson, son of the original inventor, was once an acquaintance of mine and helped me a lot with my unit.)

If you do get it, make sure you grab the Marvel Mystery Oiler that goes with it, if it's still there - the blower can't be used without one to lube the vanes. They can be purchased new and used, but they're not cheap. Also grab any drive pulleys, since they are similarly pricey to replace.

George Folchi in Milford Connecticut can offer you any parts you need, or a whole rebuild for any of the Judson models. I think he also sells whole kits when he comes across them.

Not sure whose MG this is, but here's a photo of an installed one from that link. Very pretty.

Bill,
I have lots of pictures from when I had mine. Would have to post them on something like Shutterfly.
This is a sketch I made while working on it.

This site never ceases to amaze me. Thanks everyone for the info. I'm waiting for the guy to dig it out of his attic. When I find out more I will post. He claims that someone makes kevlar vanes for these back east(?)

It's also interesting to note that in MG's (and my Morris, too), although they're producing more HP, they actually tend to run *cooler* with a Judson - just the opposite of what you'd expect. The reason is that there's significant valve overlap in the MG & MOWOG engines and as such the blower scavenges the remaining hot exhaust gasses and provides a cooler intake charge, cooling the motor. In cool weather Judson recommended blocking the radiator to increase the engine heat.

Thanks Kevin, very interesting observation

Are these really pricey to overhaul. I talked with Lawrie Alexander this evening at our SVMGCC meeting and he said he ran one one on a MGPA and an expag years ago and had mixed results
W. A. Chasser Jr

Yeah, to have them rebuilt by George costs a fair bit, but then have you seen how much they sell for when done? I've seen them sell for in excess of $3K, fully rebuilt. As for mixed results, yes, I've heard similar things - I think it kind of depends on what the condition of the motor is to begin with and what other tuning you do - spark, timing, etc. - if any of that is lacking the blower (any blower) will make the problems worse, not better.
Kevin McLemore

I had to sell my Judson and it was for over 3k. It is very easy to work on if it is not in bad shape. it is a project you can do yourself, parts are available from George F. who can fill you in on lots of details, he is the guy. If you put a Judson on, make sure you have a solid engine and crank to handle the extra load. They do tend to make the engine run a little hotter. Marvel Mystery oil is a must with the system and they can be a little tricky to get the oil drip just right. but man does the Judson make a difference. Good luck.

I'm surprised none of you have mentioned the one that came up on ebay yesterday. MG-26. Refurbished. Looks very nice. Over 3K.
Check it out in MG parts for sale.

I'm going to have one for sale shortly, I'm rebuilding a carb for it. If any one is interested contact me off list.

I always like the slogan they put on the boxes when you ordered them new... "Another Package of Power!"
Kevin McLemore

I think the guy is a flake... Can't seem to take 20 min in 3 wks to get it out of his attic
W. A. Chasser Jr

BTW, I thought I'd post a photo of the box for my NOS Judson (for a Sprite/Morris Minor/MG midget). Love that slogan.

Did McCullough ever make a blower set up for an MG? Some of them were quite small and looked like they would have been a good candidate for a 4 cyl engine. PJ
Paul S Jennings

Absolutely, Paul, though I've not seen one in person.
