MG TD TF 1500 - J A Benjamin, disc brake update?

Jim, any updates on your disc brake installation? I'm thinking of installing the NTG kit but wondered if you've had any problems with your set up.

Thanks

I have not gone very far.
But they seem to be much better.
Only instillation issue was that the steering arm on the passenger side was twisted and the ball joint scraped the disc.
I untwisted it with a large adjustable wrench and a floor jack.
Every thing else was fine.

Thanks Jim.

I'm also contemplating the NTG kit (as I noted in my postings) sometime this summer and would be interested in your postings of your changeout and on-the-road experiences.
Of course need to balance time, energy, and $ for getting a "tired" (in my mind) engine running with more oomph, brakes, get rid of the old reddish-orange "patina", ... :)

Randy, I finished my 51 TD about 1 1/2 years ago. But in the beginning of April I pulled the engine to take care of a lot of leaks and address low oil pressure. I've added a roller cam, a rebuilt gearbox with new sliding hubs, Jethot coated header, and Declan Burns' remote brake fluid reservoir and upgraded clutch linkage. I'm waiting to see how the car runs after putting it back together before ordering the disc brake kit. But when (if) I do I'll post my experiences here. If I ever want to get my money back out of this car I will have to sell it three times :-)

Just to join in, I had (finally)the new top and side curtains installed. When I got it back from the Upholsterer I noted a lot of oil on the floor. The Speedometer drive was leaking. I replaced that with a FTFU special and then, while adjusting the tappet I found the Water pump and radiator leaking.
New pump and re-cored radiator. But while I was at it I finally installed the dual Water Temperature-Oil pressure gauge I got on eBay about 5 years ago.

Almost back together.

Jim, so I'm not the only one with the "while I'm at it" curse.

I am surprised that you folks are ordering disk brake kits from suppliers, when any disk brakes from an MGA or MGB should fit and should be easily available from a breaker or just lying around in a yard.

I don't have them on my TF, but originally questioned what brake master should be used and how to mount it. I subsequently learned that the standard TD/TD brake cylinder will work w/o modification.

Anybody tried this?

I'll bet there are hundreds of MGBs rusting away, from which the disk breaks could easily be used.

Easier with an MGA set up, rather than an MGB, but much harder to find.

I have installed MGA brakes on my TF. Used MGA mounting plates and new calipers / rotors. Ended up costing $600 for everything by using used MGA caliper mounting plates. I did have to remove a small seal from the master cylinder to let the Discs release.
LaVerne has an excellent write up on the installation including videos. I did the sway bar at the same time.

Rick

Lookin' good Rick. Do you think that the MGB brakes would fit with the MGA caliper mounting plates?

Wire Wheels ....Easy,
Disc Wheels .... Not so.
Requires adapters and modifications..

Midlands Sports & Classics (England) will sell you a complete MGA disc brake kit for £200, though you will need a few extras and a little work to fit a TF.

The MGA backing plates only fit the MGA calipers. To use MGB, you need the Moss plates. At least that is what I found in my research. The only other issue was the need to have the Rotor diameter reduces. Check LaVerne's video on You Tube.

Rick

Jim B nailed the issue. That's why looking at suppliers so as not having to convert all around to wires.
