MG TD TF 1500 - Intermittent engine stoppage Report

On February 25, I posted a plea for help dealing with my engine problem. I received a lot of helpful comments. Probably the most frequent suggestions implicated the coil or the rotor.

We replaced the coil after talking with Petronix about the sppropriate type and replaced the rotor after a little judicious shaving.

My problem appears to be solved! Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to offer suggestions.

Thanks for the feedback, Paul. I'm curious as to which coil they suggested. Bud

This will be second hand reporting because the mechanic talked to Petronix. My understanding of their conversation is that the coil I had was inappropriate for Petronix units because the resistance was too high. I believe the old coil had resistance around 4.5 ohms whereas Petronix said it should be down around 3 ohms. The Petronix representative said that with the higher resistance the coil is prone to overheating and temporarily crapping out. If you wish, I can check tonite to see what mfr'r and model was installed.

This could be very interesting news for many!
I have seen a lot of negative post on here about the Petronix.
I have never had a lick of trouble, but for the record, when I installed mine I also installed their flamethrower coil.
I had several bad Lucas sports coils in a row producing "low spark" ...and that was still running points.

I have the Lucas Sport coil with my Petronix, and have never had a problem....
I didn't test it , but I'm pretty sure it's a 3 ohm coil.

Thanks, Paul. Reading the pertronix literature you'll see that they want to work with coils having input resistances of around 3 ohms. Low resistance coils, around 1.5 ohms, are apt to destroy the Pertronix modules. I've had nothing but good results with them for 10 years. That's notwithstanding the problem with the rotor (http://www.ttalk.info/Failure.htm). Bud

Only two seasons but approx 5.000 miles in my TF "Vera " with pertronix kit including their Flamethrower coil. An excellent set up, improved running, idling and starting, and no negative issues so far.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that was 10+ years ago!
Apearently there was a bad run of these back then.
(Confirmed by John Twist when I was at is shop in ADA around 2001)

The newer units may be fine.
