MG TD TF 1500 - Instrument panel removal question

I'm trying to remove my instrument panel so that I can get the ignition switch out to check some things out (I have a problem -- none of the switched gear working despite good fuses etc... ultimately all related to the new fuel pump I just installed that doesn't have power)

I've removed 5 of the 6 bolts attaching it, but cannot get to the nut on the backside of the last one. Am I missing something?

Picture attached. Next post will show the back side of the panel to show that there's no nut I can grab

Here' the underside of the panel and as you can see, I don't have a nut to get to. As you can see to the right of the hole, there's no cutout like on a couple of the other bolts to allow me to get to the nut.

It may be behind the front facia, sandwiched between it and the rear piece of wood. Unscrew the front facia (dash) and pull it away and see if you can get to the nut then. George

Stan, I pretty much don't remove the instrument panel when I have to 'go back there'. I find it easier to remove the steering wheel (extension shaft with the wheel attached), remove speedo and tach cables, and remove the eight screws holding the fascia in place. Then I just pull the fascia towards me. I do have just enough wires and choke and starter cable runs to be able to do this.

The little carriage bolts and nuts on the back side seem too fiddly to undo. Since the wiring all goes to the instrument panel and the choke and starter cables too, there really isn't much advantage to just removing and working on the instrument panel over the entire fascia.

Stan,
It's a lot easier to work in there if you remove your left leg.
I'm sorry ...couldn't resist that one.
Note to self: Shut-up and go polish your carbs.

I tried removing the 8 screws through the fascia and seemed to get no movement, that's why I started going at it this way. I'll try it again and see if maybe it's hanging up on something. It has probably been at least 37 years since anyone removed the fascia from it's backing.

Stan, you also have to remove the speedo and tach, I think the clamps clamp on to the inner facia. George

George, sorry you are incorrect about having to remove the Speedo and tach.

The fascia panel will come out intact. See my website.

with all due respect to dave, i would offer that dave's advice is spot on as done at the factory. no telling what PO has done in the mean time. i would take a look around at the back side of the panel. regards, tom

Dave, right you are- must be that CRS again. Just felt around under my dash. Interesting that the hidden nut in question is not hidden on my car, so there may be some DPO deal here. The fascia could just be stuck also, or maybe different because it is RHD? George

Hey David, this makes me feel better- while cleaning out my workshop yesterday, I noticed at my old water temp gauge hanging on the wall. My TD was made before the dual gauge, and when dad bought it in the 70s, we ordered and installed the single TC-type water temp gauge, put it to the left of the speedo/tach. The mounting bracket was behind both the inner and outer dash, and what I was remembering was trying to remove the outer facia without removing that bracket first. George

George,

It just goes to show the individuality of these cars. Most of my thoughts and responses are based on standard configurations- unless I happen to know something about the modification in question!

I know that on my car, two of the cariage bolt nuts attaching the instrument panel to the fascia are in a recess in the dash back board, and the other is in a relieved section.

warmly,
dave
