MG TD TF 1500 - I Phone Car Charger

Anyone use an iphone charger in their positive earth car? If so, how did you hook it up? PJ
Paul Jennings

Found a plug with no external grounding issues, used in Marine applications, completely isolated, it should be perfect for a charger plug. Now I just have to figure out where to hid it. PJ

I've got that in the TD and the A. Have yet to use them, but when ya need it.....

I'd decided to fix the outlet on a box. I also integrated a fuse and connect the box with two stripes to the dashboard connectors. The box itself is fastened with binders on the pipe under the dash. An aditional USB adaptor completes for charging.

I have a 12V charger similar to the one you pictured.

I simple wired it backwards, I spliced it to the small two prong accessary plug that is on the dash of my TD.

It works with both charging my iPhone and my Garmin GPS.

After I wired it I checked with a multi tester and it was 12V and negative ground.

So what you guys are saying, wire the red wire to ground and the black wire to positive? PJ
Paul Jennings

forget about color;
Wire the positive side to the positive side of the battery and the negative side of the 12V adaptor to ground or negative side of the batttery.

On a 12V adaptor, the inside of the adaptor has two contact points the metal shield on the side gets wired to ground and the contact point at the bottom goes to positive .

I'm sorry I made my first post confusing.
when I wired mine I just taped into the two wires going to that little adaptor.

If it were me, I'd consider wiring it into the floorboard near the seat. Regardless of the plug, the wood would insulate it from ground and the plug location would be quite handy to charge the device.

I installed one in our TF and it is in the back of the glove compartment indent, on the passenger side, therefore it is isolated from meta, and wired as said above.I also did the same in my 6 volt flathead Ford. No problem charging any of phone GPS or Bluetooth speaker.

The unit that Paul has pictured and a similar unit that I got (it uses a cigar lighter socket and plug) are isolated from ground, so it installed anywhere without having to do anything (such as installing in the wooden floor boards). The plug that goes to computer, cell phone or whatever can be plugged into the socket and is wired for the polarity is needed. Cheers - Dave

It's a day out - leave your phone at home.

Great idea Lan, but with medical issues at the house, I can't be without it. PJ

Paul,
My TD is positive ground.
I used a standard marine dual USB port with mounting bracket as you can see from the photo.
As mentioned above just wire positive to positive and negative to negative.
I had a suction cup type iPhone mount on the windscreen with a short cord for the USB port. See next post.

This mount is similar to mine:

My port might have had a cover that I cut off. It's been a few years and I do not recall exactly.

Photo of iPhone mount. It's the one on the right. The one on the left is my GPS. The GPS has a separate marine power port.

Get an Android phone and you won't need a car charger.

Paul,
This is the port I used. I bought it on Amazon.

BTW

I use my iPhone with the "Pandora" app and listen to any kind of music we choose. I have this fantastic small Bluetooth speaker that I Velcro in place behind us and can hear very well even at high speed with the top up or down.

This is the speaker on eBay but can be purchased elsewhere.

Hi Paul -

I searched a number of 12v sockets to use with a phone charger in my TF. This Ebay seller had the best selection and was most knowledgeable. USB and cigarette lighter style sockets are insulated and can be used with Pos or Neg ground.

I suggest insulating the connections with part #110791911918 "Add a right angle boot to your socket purchase- special listing" See bottom photo below.
