MG TD TF 1500 - I don't recall this problem mentioned before

My beauty just was tuned up in preparation for a long trip. I received it and took it out for a lengthy run around the block and it died a few miles away. I walked back and the garage owner sent the truck out for it. When the guy reached it, he ended up DRIVING it onto the truck. The owner then took it out for a test run and it died right away. He ran some tests on the ignition and found no spark. He narrowed it pretty quickly to a bad rotor. There were no cracks. He holds that the higher voltages in modern coils (Pertronics, F.I.)exceed the capacity of the plastic over time (when it heats up)and we ought carry a supply of new rotors. Opinions?

Contact Jeff at Advanced Distributors. He has commissioned a set of rotors with 1) better attachement of the electrode, 2) non-black (black plastic has a lot of carbon which can develop carbon tracking). He sells them two at a time, one for your distributor, and one for a spare (but I've never needed my spare)

Hope this helps,
Dave

This problem has nothing to do with higher voltage from the pertronix systems and everything to do with a batch of marginal rotors that have been on the market for the past several years. Dave B is correct, contact Jeff at Advanced Distributors http://www.advanceddistributors.com/ and get a couple of the rotors he sells - they will probably out last the car (or at least those of us who own the cars). If you haven't already had your distributor overhauled, consider sending it to Jeff. It will come back better than new. Cheers - Dave

This same thing happened to me recently...it is well known to Moss and they now supply a red rotor. There is a good explanation as to why it happens at I think Kip motors I think.
