MG TD TF 1500 - I don't belive it

Go to this link http://www.cosmopolitanmotors.com
and you can see blatant missrepresentaion of two MGTD's. There are so many thing visually wrong I could not have the space here to list them. I think it is almost worse than a kit car being called an MGTD.

Unfortunately worse has been marketed as totally original, and no doubt someone has put considerable money in these two. At least both appear to have an xpag engine.

Gee ...really dosen't matter...I mean I just have to have the viper with the "fish fry" going on on the hood! Would look great towing a matching pontoon boat or perhaps an air-stream trailer with a "tornado" theme paint job!
What the H__L are these folks smoking?

Are we talking about the red RHD '51 and the cream '50 as not being quite right? I wonder what you, Greg & Grim, see that I don't. By the way, they are both also on eBay.

One even has the steering wheel on the wrong side! Must have been an old rural mail delivery car.

I've seen much worse too, nothing uncorrectable! They both look like enjoyable cars; how can that be wrong?

Willem van der Veer

GJ- lighten up! Both are reasonably correct with most of the major stuff there. Colors wrong to hideous, and both way overpriced. These cars are more complete and correct than many I have seen over the years. Probably worth about 10-12 K in my opinion!
George Butz

Thanks George, I was feeling bad since my pride and joy looks only marginally better than the cream colored car. There are truly some much worse examples to be found. Also, did someone run a special on chrome slats for the TD grill? I see more and more of these and they are too straight to be anything but repro items.

Feeling better,

I think they stole my car - the Cream one - down to the brass hinges and black piping is exactly what mine looks like. I agree both are overpriced. I wonder why the red one is so much more than the cream one.

Ok lets be snobbish and tear these apart. I will start.

51. Has mismatched rim on spair tire (older 4 slot)

Grill is wrong for a non-MkII

Seat color is incorrect (although mine are
black also)

Wood dash (I also have a wood dash)

Windshiled wiper wire not in the windshield frame

Missing horn

50 Wrong instruments for 1950(should be flat)

Wrong grill for a non-MkII

Wrong voltage regulator (1950 would have 9 pin)

Missing original air cleaner.

Wrong color piping (mine is also black)

Saying that. I would take either one if they want to donate them.

I guess I miss-stated my original thoughts on this (gonna blame old age). All my friends that have TD's in this area of MI no two are alike but WE all love our own. I also remember back in late '50's and early '60's when I was heavy into TD's and at the local gymkana's we all used to remark about how no 2 of our TD's were alike. I don't think there were 2 alike TD's ever turned out by the factory. I tell you that no two TD front wings are symmetrical surface wise(by todays computer design technology)but that's what makes them so lovable (no person ever born has been symmetrical). I guess that what it amounts to is I disliked the description of the vehicles as given by the Cosmopolitan blokes, but hey free speach EH.
By the way, next time you are at an MG gathering stand back about 10ft from the front of all the MGA's ( 1 at a time of course)and site down the C/L of the vehicle and you will see that the joint between the front wings and the body are not symmetrical. Which is fine, I'm not saying it's a bad thing just a lovable fact of life.
Enough of this tittle-tattle. Tomorrow I am going on test drive with TD and Grimmy (English Cocker helper, what else) so wish us luck. (taking cell phone lovers advice).
Cheers and have a good weekend all.

Oh.... it could be so much worse!!! I was born in the late '40's (gulp), so i suppose that puts me at about the "average" age of TD owners. I remember the MGA being announced... Wow, so "un MG". I also remember everyone admiring all the modifications new owners did to their "stock" sports cars... Pull off that gear shift knob and put on a lovely "wood" one (available with or without the badge). If you had the cash ($24.95) you went with the wooden steering wheel (unless you bought a "Nardi", then you must have been a lawyer).
Over the years you kept the old ones on the road using any parts you could find, "stock" didn't really have all that much to do with it, in fact i think it was frowned upon ("Say Gordon, do you want me to cut out 6 of the vertical MGA grille slats to mount your new $12.95 Lucas flamethower?"..."Sure, it will look cool!").
Now days its really neat to have a "as from the factory" restored TD... however, i would rather see more on the road in just about any shape, then knock a few black interiors or wrong hub caps..... (Ok, the german scout car was going a bit over the top!!!!!) As long as we keep them on the road.

Just a 4 in the morning insomniac's 2 cents

gordon ( hey...anyone make a "rear wing" for a TD) lawson
g.b.lawson '53TD

ata boy GBL you tell em. I take it you might need a rear wing. what side.
Sandy
conrad sanders

Darn... forgot about "wing"/"fender"... i meant (oh i hate it when i have to explain jokes) a rear wing, as in "increase the downforce...add a wing". Can you imagine???????? (bet there is one out there somewhere).
g.b.lawson '53TD

Yes there are tds with down force wings
Just dont pack your hood too nice and cover it with the toneu, and you have the wing
on the backof your car.
