MG TD TF 1500 - How do I access theTF wiper drive/switch mechanism

Hello,

I am trying to work on my thread titles. In a previous thread I reported that a while ago we were out driving with the front screen folded on our 54 TF.

Accidentally I managed to start the LH wiper (I have a dash mounted dip switch for the wipers), stopped it after a few seconds but now wipers do not work. The wiper motor is not running and there is a "dead " feel to the LH wiper button ( LHD car, so this is the electric contact button as well. ) When I disconnect the drive wire from the motor it spins when coupled directly to the battery)

It seems I need to access the drive/switch mechanism behind the dashboard. My questions are therefore:

1: Will I gain access to the mechanism by removing the glove compartment?

2. If the answer to question 1 is yes, how do I remove the glove compartment?

( I would HATE to remove the dashboard!!!!)

Thank you,

Jan

PS: I got some very useful pics of the drive/switch mechanism from Len Fanelli, thank you Len!)

The glove box can be removed without removing the dash, but it isn't easy. You have to remove the wiper knob and then the tiny nuts that secure the box to the dash. On the drivers side you may have to lower the steering column as well. It's pretty difficult ( at least for me) to get the box off of the shaft and out from behind the dash without removing the dash but I have done it on the passenger side.

I understand your feelings about removing the dash. It's something I will have to do soon to begin repairs from the deer incident.

An update; A bit more fiddling with the switch in the glove box and the normal "feel" of the push and rotate function suddenly reemerged but the wipers still would not run, the motor being totally silent. Removed the motor and ran it on a direct battery connection, spinning smoothly. voltmeter job, no ground. Seemingly I have managed to tear off the ground wire where it connects to drivers side knob under the dash. New ground lead to chassis under hood, a toggle switch for the wipers under the dashboard, and I am ready or this weekends trip to Sweden, where the forecast says rain. Rain-Xed the front screen as well. Once again, support from fellow listers and a quiet evening in the garage solves the unsolvable. Thank you!

Regards,

Jan
