MG TD TF 1500 - Hot after rebuild

The adventure continues......Ok, I finally got the oil pump to prime by removing the bottom nut holding the relief valve on the oil pump. I packed it very full of vasolene and after re-isertion, it worked. I timed it at 17 degrees BTDC @ 3000 RPM. It runs great for 15 to 20 minets after which the temp gague pegs. Any ideas? Thanks, Tom

Are you driving it or running it static? The car has to be moving to get decent airflow across the radiator. That fan is worthless. If you are static what happens if you put a large house fan in front of the radiator?

Whats the outside temp? New engines are definately tight and can be hot boxes during the first 1k miles.

Check to make sure the thermostat is working and your waterpump is circulating the coolent.

But is it boiling, steaming, and rumbling like tea kettle? If not then the gauge is inaccurate. Use a candy or meat thermometer in the header tank and compare it to the gauge on the dash.

Why not 0 degrees TDC static?

I don't know if the distributer is at full advance at 3000 RPM, but the full advance is 28-32 degrees on the early distributers and 22-26 degrees on the late 53s. If the timing is retarded, I believe an engine will run hot. Why not time it according the factory recommendation and see what happens?

The adventure continues.......Ok, changed the timing to the original and things have cooled to 90 degrees C.
Things are looking up. Thanks for everything, Tom
