MG TD TF 1500 - Harting Fuel Pump

My 1953 TD has run well for about ten years with a Harting fuel pump. Recently it has become intermittent acting as if there was a restriction on the input side. Drained the tank, cleaned the filter and fuel line, disassembled the pump and cleaned the input filter also cleaned the thimble filters at the float bowls. Very minor amount of fine powdered rust but no significant clogs. Pump check valves seem to be in good working order and the diaphragm seems in good condition. Burnishing the contacts seems to had resulted in a small improvement but not a complete fix.

Since the Harting pump is not an exact copy of the SU pump I am not certain that the detailed SU adjustment procedure in the workshop manual applies. Any advise, knowledge, and/or experiences regarding the electromagnetic portion of these pumps would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Jim - The Harting is a good pump until it packs it in - there are no spares to be had of it and SU parts may or may not fit (points DO NOT FIT). About the only adjustment that you can make to the Harting is the the points. There is a screw that goes through the center of the upper points spring that will adjust the upper contact set. You will need to remove the mask that goes over the hex head of the screw until after the adjustment is completed, then put back in place when done. If adjusting the points doesn't get the pump running properly, then your best bet is to purchase a new pump. Cheers - Dave

David,
Thank you for the info. I will try the screw adjustment and see what happens.

If the adjustment is not the answer I am thinking about an SU electronic conversion but I have no core to offer up for a rebuild. Do you ever have extra pumps for sale? You may reach me at the email address to the left.

Thanks again.

For sure the SU diaphragm does not fit the Harting pump, as I gave that a try once. So replacing it with an SU is your only real option if you can't adjust your way in. Mike

Jim, I am not sure if I still have them but I had 2 Harting pumps, that came with Little-T. I will check this evening when I get home and if I did not throw them away you can have them; maybe take the 3 and make one.

I have one, too, and I would donate it to the cause! It cycles but does not pump well. Mike

Jim, I do have the two pumps, one works the other doesn't. One is interesting as it has a clear end. If you want them they are yours.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the kind offers. I may ask again if things do not work out. I took Dave's advice and tried the adjustment screw yesterday. The pump started pumping well only to discover the float in the front carb sank like a stone. Carb is now apart awaiting a new float due here about Friday. If the adjustment works well at highway speeds I will probably stick with my existing pump. Your generous offers are greatly appreciated. I will report final results next week.

Gentlemen,

The float arrived and was installed this AM. Since the front carb was apart I chose to do a complete carb adjustment. Started and came up to temp at a fast idle. Performed the workshop manual adjustment procedure. Pump performed without a problem for about an hour in the shop. Watched the armature flipping with the cover off the whole time. Looks like we are back in business. Tomorrow we will take a spin around town.

Thank you again to all who offered advice, spare parts, and helpful hints. This board is undoubtedly populated by a most helpful and generous group. Thus the above greeting.

Best regards & Safety Fast

Gentlemen,
Got out on the road today and she ran like she was five years old not 59. More questions to come on a new thread soon. Wish I was 59 again...
