MG TD TF 1500 - Hard starting

My TF 1500 is extremely hard to start. It acts like it is not getting enough fuel. Cold weather starts are most difficult (below 40 deg F). The starter grinds awqay forever. Once started it runs great.

It seems like the carb linkages may not be right---- as if one carb is not getting enough choke. Dave DuBois suggested that I check the voltage at both ends of the battery cable.

The fuel pump is working properly. Float level is set right. Would appreciate suggestions on why it is so difficult to start.

Thanks,
Ben

Have you checked to see that both jets pull down equally about an inch when you pull out the choke knob completely? I have seen binding choke cables that in effect strangle the enrichment. The last car I saw like that was funny - the owner was furiously pumping away at the gas pedal and couldn't believe it would not start. Of course, pumping did nothing, but as soon as I disconnected the choke cable and pulled the linkage back by hand, it started right up.

When cold, squirt a quick shot of ether into each air cleaner. If it at least briefly starts, then something in the choke mechanism is definitely wrong. The ether starting fluid would rule out anything electrical/spark.
