Bob. I converted my headlamps with ordinary
7" rflectors with asymetric lence to accept H4 bulbs. A perfect fit in the buckets

Bob-
Standard modern H4 will not fit the original reflectors, as they have the wrong base configuration. There are H4 on various vintage bases available, takes some searching. The vintage British bike community is one place to look. I think Moss are supplying one of these, suitable for early Lucas lamps, might be what you need.

Relays are always good, but it is important to correct wiring deficiencies too, and perhaps first. Lots of other stuff besides the headlamps will work better.

Basic test: Hot, running at 2200, fully charged battery, everything ON. Measure at gen, D to earth, that's reference V. Then measure at the point of interest, hot to earth, should be the same, or within .25V for heavily loaded circuit like lights. The critical point for lights is bulb hot to bulb earth at the bulb. If not within .25V of ref V, measure at other points until you find the voltage drop(s). You can find drops by measuring across any section of a (loaded - ALWAYS) circuit, say from one side of the ammeter, or a switch, to the other, should be zero. Two rules: any hot to any other hot = zero, same for earths. And, any hot to any earth = reference V.

Bob. Yes it was a big improvement in the lighting and you also get the asymetric light.
And to FRM. I am not talking of using the original reflectors, just new 7" innards as
mounted in "all modern" cars" from 1970
(MGB ?) I have not yet mounted any releys.

I converted to HID headlights.

About 3 times brighter than bright beams, but only 35 watts each.
