MG TD TF 1500 - Girling Shock Replacement

"I'm in the process of rebuilding the front suspension on my 1950 TD, bushings, brakes and bearings etc. Is there a way to remove and replace the front shocks without having to remove the fender? Also, what is the best way to clear the pistons from the brake cylinders? Thanks for the assist.
Cheers,
JAP

John - Girling shocks should come off without any clearance problem with the fenders. If they have been replaced at some time previously with the Armstrong shocks, there is a clearance problem with the inside bolts and it may be necessary to loosen the front of the fender to get the inside bolts out. If your shocks have aluminum bodies, they you have the armstrong shocks vice the girlings. By the way, if your shocks need rebuilding, try World Wide Auto Parts of Madison for rebuilding, they do a great job. Their web site is: http://www.nosimport.com/
If the pistons are stuck in the cylinders, you can sometimes get them loose by heating them. If that doesn't work, a zerk fitting in an old hose fitting screwed into the cylinder and then pump grease into the cylinder from a grease gun will usually force the piston out. Then all you have to do is clean up the mess left from all the grease. Good luck - Dave
