MG TD TF 1500 - Generator Paint Color

Is the Generator end plates painted or left aluminum? Is the body gloss black, semigloss black or engine red? What color is the color of the pulley?
This is on a 1955 MG TF 1500
Thanks

Jay - End bells are natural aluminum, body is either a gloss or simi-gloss black (although I prefer a simi flat black, available from Krylon for all the black items in the engine compartment) and the pully and fan are engine red. Cheers - Dave

Hello. I am looking at a pre-op picture of the left side motor on a TF-1500 that I restored in 1989 or so. The car had 17,000 orig. miles at the time. The pulley and fan are clearly black. The adjuster is red. The front plate is aluminum, and the back is black, but I can't tell if it is from gunk or not. This car was bought in '56 by the '89 owner, and was really parked in a barn for years. I can read the date (6/54) in the gen. case. This was a virgin, dirty, and rusty car! This is car #7613. George

David,
On examining Jim Holcombe's absolutely original TF 1500,
the generator pully and fan and the body of the generator are that semi-gloss black that Lucas still uses, the ends are unpainted.
Jim's car was purchased in early '55 and stored after only 1200 miles, along with othe cars of the era. Jim bought it from the estate aabout 8 years ago. It still had the tag on the radiator for the original fill of antifreeze. We use it whenever an originality question comes up.
And, oh yes, the valve cover is NOT silver, but is that grey-green that was used on early TC engines and fire walls. See Coopers TF site for a picture. You may be able to see the generator pully in this picture.

Don,
would you have an address for Coopers TF web site with the pictures?
Thanks
Ken Bannister

Ken,
The site for Cooper's is The Original TF midget.

www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtf/

and/or the TD site /mgtd/

I just looked, the valve cover picture doesn't show the generator.

A check of the T Series Handbook from the New England MG T Register, we are all correct. Apparently the generator fans and pulleys came either engine red or black.

Original parts.
Dynamo is black.
End Plates, unpainted
Pully, engine red
Adjuster, engine red.

I agree with Dave, pulleys came in two flavours.
