MG TD TF 1500 - gearbox noise TF

When easing of the throttle in my TF the gearbox transmits a dry and grinding noise, this does not occur when engine cold, or when load is removed eg; nuetral, cluch disengagaed, when underpower the noise is not noticable.
The gearbox has been fully overhauled, including all bearings, needle rollers, etc.

Hope you can help.
Cheers.

is there oil in the box ?
sorry but nowadays peoples working under time pressure and some basics will be overlooked.

"When easing of the throttle in my TF the gearbox transmits a dry and grinding noise"

Does this happen in all gears ?? Could the noise possibly be comming from the diff??

I guess some more info might help. Did it make this noise before the gearbox rebuild? Immediately after? Dry and grinding sounds pretty serious.
Tom

The gearbox has the correct level of oil, the diff has been converted to 4.3 and completly overhauled at that time, the noise did start after gearbox was reconditioned, including complete clutch replacement including spigott bearing replacement.
My God, when I read the list of of work that has been done, I realise the money that has been spent, but the TF is my favorite charity.

siezed U-joint? Bellhousing bolt too long and hitting flywheel? George

Hi Cyril, mine does the same if you ease the throttle at about 50 or 60 mph in top gear. Most offputting! I've had the box in bits but can't find any problem. It is puzzling, as in top the drive is direct. My other gearbox makes even more noise (like ballbearings in a can) under the same conditions. Replaced the diff and that made no difference either.I think maybe its because the car has no carpets or sound deadening of any kind. Bear in mind too that noises can travel through the structure and seem to emanate a long way from the unit that is generating them, so it may not be the gearbox at all.
Do you have any acoustic dampening materials around the tunnel? Regards, Richard.

R Payne,

In the TD/TF gearbox there is never in direct drive. All motion from the first motion shaft goes through the cluster gear to the main shaft. Top gear may be a 1:1 ratio, but it isn't direct.

Cyril... Check to see if the down pipe bracket is installed. It may be that something has shifted and you are getting a slight touching of the exhaust system on something and this will transmit noise all over the place. Try and remove the bracket and listen for the noise. All it takes is one bolt on the clamp and rotate the clamp to clear the bracket.

Respectfully Dave, you might want to take another look at the innards of the gearbox. Also, check page F.1 of the Workshop Manual. From the paragraph entitled 'General Description' "...Top gear is obtained by direct drive..." The laygear is rotating, but is not used to obtain the direct top gear. There is no component in the gearbox called 'fourth gear, or top gear'. Bud

You're right Bud, I was going off the gearbox from memory since I'm out of town. Thanks for correcting my mistake.

The 3/4 slider locks the first motion shaft to the central 3/4 hub which is splined to the mainshaft, hence direct drive. I like Sandy's idea- maybe something is hitting when due to torque reaction when you let off of the gas? Exhausts can make really bad noises when rubbing on something.

It may be that with certain wear conditions, the unloaded cluster gear sets up a chatter at some speeds. Regards, Richard.
