MG TD TF 1500 - Gas tank gunk

Short of taking the tank out of my 51 MGTD, is there any way to restore the 51 year old gas tank. It appears to have rust inside and it clogs up the fuel line to the point where the pump cannot fill the carbs. Can I clean it, etch it, and seal it without taking it off the car? Or are there any other solutions?
Thank you,
Denis Johnson

Denis,
Nothing I have ever heard of to clean/etch/& seal that would not require some turnning over of the tank to ensure you get it all. I guess you could turn the entire car upside-down and shake it....(I would be afraid what else would fall off mine doing this!)...the tank is fairly easy to remove...at least on the TF it was. (2 bottom bolts/fuel line/ low fuel wiring) I would be fearfull of doing it on the car and getting the cleaners on the paint.

You pretty much have to remove the tank from the car. I did mine while under restoration. I used the rubber pad holes on the bottom of the tank to hang it on a rope, between two trees. Then you can just turn it over and over and over. In order not to mess up your paint, you have to plug all holes. I used wood, and the gas cap. I would test this seal with water first. I emptyed the gas, cleaned, and etched the tank and sealed the tank like this. I used Bill Hirsch'S products. He sells a kit in guart cans? (cleaner, etcher, sealer)1-800-828-2061 The one definate thing you need to do when sealing you tank, is to use alcohol resistant sealer. I learned this the hard way, on my first car I used airplane/aaviation tank sealer. This worked very well until I purchased a tank of gas that had a gas/ alcohol mix. The sealer coating turned into a carmal consistancy, dropped to the bottom of the tank and clogged the fuel line all the way to the fuel pump. So this leads me to the second recommendation. Install a see thru inline fuel filter on scuddle before fuel pump, after you sealer job..
Hope this helps. John
