MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel tank fittings sealant

I have read that permatex aviation gasket maker is recommended for sealing the sending unit. Is there a sealer needed for the fuel line adapter and drain plug? Someone mentioned gasoila. I can't find it locally. Is there a substitute I can find in a NAPA, Pepboys, Lowes, etc? Or can I use the permatex?
Thanks

According to the producer, Blue Hylomar is petrol resistant. I have used it with excellent results on both cars and motorcycles over the last 40 years. The Hylomar - Rolls Royce connection is a nice thing to think about as well.

I plan to change sweating fuel tank connections on the TF this winter and Hylomar would be my choice if no one else comes up with a caveat,

Permatex makes an extreme performance thread sealant compound. Here is the mfg link. Can be purchased at all auto motive parts houses.

Just NEVER use pipe sealing tape in ANY automotive application...ever.

I use permetex #2 and it works well

Tom, you might want to read the Permatex info again:
*****
Economical general-purpose fitting sealant. Outperforms tapes and pipe dopes. Seals and resists pressure in air, oil, diesel fuel and hydraulic systems.
*****
Gasoline is not included. Last I knew there were zero sealants that are guaranteed for gasoline. I'm with David. Permatex #2 does a good job on the sending unit. Bud

Try Permatex #97 - I've used it with good results and it's available at most auto parts stores (Autozone, O'Reilly, etc.)

For what this is worth, I just repainted my tank and car. I reinstalled a new filter/fitting and replaced the drain, both with new fibre washers. No leak after a week with gas in.
I had thought that those red fuel system washers did not need sealant.

...helps to go 'round and round' when tightening all those sender screws... i did about a 1/16th turn on each. Just sayin'

I am with Tom Norby - use new fiber washers. The fittings in the MG fuel systems are all a parallel pipe thread and require a fiber washer at each joint - no thread sealer is needed, nor is it recommended. Make sure that the sealing surface on the two tank bosses are smooth and as parallel to the threads as possible.

As for the sending unit - that is a different animal and I have found that Permatex 2 liberally on the sealing surface of the tank and the sending unit and on the screw threads, then tightening around the circle tightening in steps does the job. Cheers - Dave

Thanks guys. I have the Permashield for the sending unit along with the fiber washers for the plug and fuel line adaptor. The Permashield is a newer product from Permatex. Hopefully it will perform the same as Permatex #2 or better.

I'm reactivating this thread to add this info: Permatex sells a gasoline-resistant specific product for gas tanks, fuel pumps etc.

From advice read on this forum I purchased Hylomar Blue at mammoth expense here in Aus from an auto parts outlet.

Attempted to seal leaking gasoline in a variety of applications including the MG fuel sender unit. Stuff was hopeless after a few days exposed to fuel the compound turned to jelly.

I replaced this product with "Stag" all leaks cured.

Correct grade teflon tape is used on many components on my TF including the head studs where they penetrate the water jacket and where tapered BSP fittings are used in my non standard fuel delivery line.

The negative information pertaining to automobile use is a mystery to me. This product is even used to seal fittings in aircraft dry breathing oxygen systems because it is totally inert.

"Greatest product invented since sliced bread."

I have been using Recto Seal 5 on the threads of all the fuel pump that I do, especially with the latest batch of fiber washers - they seem to be abnormally hard and don't seal well. Recto Seal 5 is available at Lowe's and Home Depot in the plumbing department. Not expensive, easy to apply and stops the leaks permanently. It is non hardening so joints come apart easily. As followup to my post above, 14 months ago. No fuel leak whatsoever using the red fiber fuel washers and no sealant.
For what it's worth.

I've used Permatex Copper for years and as long as it's kept away from high heat, it has never failed me. PJ

I used a product called Reinzoplast on my fuel sender unit and it works great. It is petrol proof and is in my opinion the best sealant available in Europe that I have come across.

Dave Dubois, are you sure "Recto-Seal" isn't something a doctor prescribes to cure the runs?
Geoffrey M Baker

D Burns advice is solid . I used it ( expensive stuff by the way ) have it on my Td for two years now .. no problems so far. Having said that I totally forgot another fine product I used on treads and cheap to called.. Tight seal ( 8 bucks a can ) back in the day's still available from Aircraft Spruce and specialty .

You might want to check out EZ Turn at Aircraft Spruce. It's a specialty lubricant/sealant used for fuel and oil line valves & is resistant to high temps. Especially effective where high octane fuels and aromatics are present. EZ Turn is also extremely efficient as a gasket paste & anti- seize agent. EZ Turn will not gum, crack or dry out. Each shipment is independently tested. Excellent for tapered plug valves, aircraft engine manufacturing, and marine applications. EZ Turn is the functional equivalent of fuel lube.
Mike Hart

Interesting the name "Recto Seal" has been mentioned. This product was banned for use on oxygen breathing system fittings during my RAAF years because it is not inert.

It was always known within the instrument fraternity as "Rectum Seal".

Guess what replaced it, PTFE Tape?
G Evans

Have been using blue Recto Seal on just about every pipe in the new apartment i am building. Great to hear it will work for the drain on the fuel tank.
Bruce Cunha

I thought Hylomar would fix my sender unit. So it did for a couple of moths. After that a slight sweating. I used the improved gasket from Brown and Gammons. Got inot the usual 2BA/3BA issue. My tank is original.

I connected and tested all the gas tank fittings today. I had installed a valve, which leaked and which I have now removed. Everything else worked perfectly, not a hint of a leak... and I used no sealant of any kind.
If it ain't broke, no need to fix it!
Geoffrey M Baker

This is impervious to gasoline, Kerosene, fuel oils etc. It's a little messy to apply with it's internal brush and you don't have a lot of time to play around, but it works!
Needless to say, I use mostly Permatex products. PJ
