MG TD TF 1500 - FUEL PUMPS, TD

I was wondering how many of you use the "electronic" fuel pumps, compared to the mechanical ones? Moss told me they are selling more of the mechanical ones. And,I noticed on E bay that one seller is stating that the mechanical ones are better, as he has far more of the "electronic" ones returned because they are faulty.
Burlen was having a problem with the coil as well as the diaphragm due to Ethanol, added to the gas, up to about a month ago.
Maybe this is why Moss is selling the mechanical ones and the E bay seller is having problems with the Electronic ones, although I would think it would effect both types of pumps. Any input would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Barry

Have Dave DuBois rebuild your pump with solid state electronics - never misses a beat then! I have not bought a new pump in 20 years, I just have cores rebuilt. There's nobody better than Dave.

Don't know about T-series pumps but as of last week Moss does not have any MGB and has not had for some time. They cite ethanol problems. I notice Gordon Strickland at the BHive is also sold out.

I emailed Burlen on Aug 6th to ask about ethanol and this is what they said:

Thank you for your enquiry. I can confirm that our fuel pumps are suitable for fuels up to 10% ethanol.

Barry - I assume that by "mechanical" you are referring to the points operated, electric SU fuel pumps. If so, I would suggest that the term "mechanical" pump not be used as that refers to pumps that are driven off the camshaft of an engine (which by the way, SU also makes).

There have been, what I would call QA issues with the all electronic pumps that Burlen Fuel has had on the market for at least 10 years. Other than that, the all electronic pumps are a good, reliable pump. I have received a fair number of the electronic pumps that have needed nothing more than adjustment and insuring that all adjustments be locked down securely so that can't move. I have also heard some complaints recently about the diaphragms not holding up to the ethanol laced fuels that are being sold today. I can't speak to that as the diaphragms I use are provided by a vendor other than Burlen Fuel Systems and I have not had any problems in the pumps that I have restored using those diaphragms.

If you want me to restore your pump and convert it to solid state (I use an optical trigger in my conversion), e-mail me at SUfuelpumps@donobi.net. Cheers - Dave

Barry: Dave Dubois overhauled my spare pump (& converted to solid state from points.) Worked so well I sent him the original in to get it done too. No problem with diaphragm deterioration & it's about 3 years now... Dave also sends a diagnosis of the deposits in the pump... which can be quite enlightening about the condition of fuel tank coatings etc. Looks good too, all cleaned up with original style connections etc.

Hi Barry

I can also attest to the fact that Dave DuBois does an excellent job rebuilding the pumps. I would not hesitate to send him one for rebuild.....I already have and I stated that I didn't need the diaphragm changed but it did go and he ended up fixing it and sending back quickly in perfect working order. Dave is a real gentleman with an incredible knowledge of these cars. Let him be the judge of what he repairs and you will have no further problems.

Dave did mine and it runs perfectly. I was quite happy to find near my new home in North Carolina a station that sells ethanol free gasoline.

Let me add my public thanks to Dave DuBois. In the dealings I have had with him he was way more than fair and extremely helpful.

You all should stop by and see Dave's workshop. No wonder they work perfectly. He has a most impressive test rig that every pump is run on.

Gents,

Dave also offers great advice on this BBS. A few words describing a minor adjustment put my Harting pump back in reliable operation. Thanks again Dave.
