MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel Pump Transil Device

I came across an intersesting article in the T registry magazine, http://www.tregister.org/pdf/15.pdf page 21. It is an in expensive electronic ad on that may help to safely extend the life of the SU fuel pumps points.I ordered a set to check it out. Any opinions on the article? Cheers, Keith

Keith - I have been using a Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) forsome time in my solid state modification for the SU fuel pumps that I restore. I use it as a protection of the FET that drives the coil. As near as I know, Transil is a brand name for the TVS. In the article you mention, the person is using it to supress the arcing across the points. It should work fine and not slow the pump down as a diode across the points does. A zener diode will also work for arc suppression across the points and does not slow the pump down. Cheers - Dave

Thanks Dave ,nice to have your opinion on this. My pump is fairly new and I thought this might be a way to extend its reliability. Cheers, Keith

Keith - If your pump is new enough to have the diode/resistor suppresser in it, that works as well as the Transil device, it is just bulkier. The diode/resistor suppresser is a 1/4" black cylinder about 3/8" long with red and black wires coming out of one end. Cheers - Dave

Dave , it has an orange flat retangular device with two wires coming off the corners and the number 47K630. Oh, and when I said my fuel pump was "fairly new" I should have said 7-8 years old.
Cheers Keith

Keith - Without going to my catalogs, I would say that the 47K630 device is a Transient Voltage Suppresser or Transil. Those devices normally have a number that start with 15K... or some other number with a K and a series of numbers behind it. Bottom line, your pump has the latest and greatest in the way of arc suppression in it. Cheers - Dave
